A Note from the Principal
NHMS Families,
I want to take a moment to address our top priority: the safety and well-being of our students. Thankfully our law enforcement partners were able to quickly resolve the mystery regarding posts on social media. We will continue to provide a secure environment and foster a positive and productive learning experience, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
1. Enhanced Security Measures:
- We have implemented robust security protocols, including secure entry points, regular safety drills, and increase in the number and quality of our camera systems.
2. Clear Communication:
- We will keep you informed about any significant updates related to school safety. Please know during an incident I am unable to provide details. It can hinder the investigative work of law enforcement. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date so you can receive timely notifications.
3. Emergency Preparedness:
- Regular drills and training are conducted to ensure our students and staff are prepared for various emergency scenarios. We work closely with local emergency services to ensure our procedures are effective.
4. Mental Health and Well-being:
- The safety of our students extends beyond physical security. We are dedicated to supporting the emotional and mental well-being of every student. Our counselors and support staff are available to provide assistance and create a supportive environment.
5. Partnership with Parents:
- Your involvement is crucial in keeping our school safe. Please remind your children of the importance of reporting any concerns they may have and encourage open communication with our staff. If they see something, say something.
6. Ongoing Evaluation:
- We continuously assess and update our safety procedures to address any new challenges and ensure we are following best practices. Your feedback is valuable in this process.
Itโs been a good academic start to the school year. This week teachers have been diagnosing the needs and the skill levels of their students. They will solidify their foundational skills and work through the year to build on them to get the students ready for high school.
Some ways to support your student:
Establish Routines:
- Set up consistent routines for homework, bedtime, and meals. Routines help children feel secure and manage their time better.
Encourage Open Communication:
- Let your child know they can talk to you about anything, whether itโs about school or other aspects of their life. Be supportive and listen actively.
Support Extracurriculars:
- Encourage your child to get involved in activities they enjoy. Itโs a great way for them to meet new friends and build skills.
Monitor Academic Progress:
- Stay informed about your child's academic progress. Keep track of grades and assignments, and help them manage their workload if needed.
I look forward to a great school year.

Planning a Trip During the School Year?
HCPS Attendance Policy states: Parent Handbook pg. 8
Family vacation or family trip โ A family vacation or a family trip during the school year is strongly discouraged as the loss of class time may have a negative impact on the studentโs academic progress and record. It is also recognized that, on some occasions, working parents/guardians have little control over the time of the year when vacations or trips may be taken. Family vacation absences are considered lawful only if they have prior written approval of the principal and do not exceed five days per school year. Written requests must be made at least ten school days in advance of the requested vacation absence and after approval, parents/guardians and students are responsible for requesting assignments. If a family vacation or trip is not approved by the school principal, the parent/guardian may contact the appropriate executive director to discuss the matter. Requests that exceed five days per year may be approved by the superintendentโs designee and may result in the withdrawal of the student for the time in which the child is not in attendance, if the absences exceed 9 consecutive unexcused days.
