MAY 2025
A Note From The Principal
It is hard to believe that April is already coming to an end. Time flies when you are having fun! May is right around the corner and with it comes the excitement of the final quarter of school. As a chool community, we are working to finish the school year strong! We remain focused on our goals and continue to focus on growth for all.
We will be taking part in the state of Missouri Assessment Program this May. This test is called the MAP test. The MAP test will be as follows:
3rd grade will test the week of April 29
5th grade will test the week of May 5
4th grade will test the week of May 12
These dates are still subject to change as needed. We are excited to have our students show all that they know and give their best! We do not expect our kids to be perfect, we just expect them to give their best!
Lastly, we do have some date changes for some of our end of the year events. With the last day of school being moved to May 23, the following date changes were necessary:
May 19: Kindergarten Graduation @1:00 pm
May 20: Field Day
May 21: Kindergarten Block Party @ 9:00 am
May 21: 5th Grade Celebration @ 10:00 am
May 22: PTA Carnival
May 23: 5th Grade Clap Out @ 1:24 pm (updates to come)
May 23: Early Release @ 1:35 pm / last day of school
I look forward to a STRONG FINISH to our school year! Watch out May, here comes Wabash!
Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts!
Mr. Schulte
Dear Families of Wabash,
I am writing to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as Assistant Principal at Wabash Elementary, effective June 30.
Serving the students, families, and staff of Wabash Elementary has been a highlight of my career. During my time here, I have been privileged to witness the growth and development of so many wonderful students, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their educational journey. I want to express my sincere gratitude for your support and partnership. My hope is to stay connected with Wabash through volunteer opportunities at the school.
Thank you or the memories and the opportunity to serve this community. I will always cherish the time spend at Wabash Elementary.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Polman
Thank you for making this a great year for the Wabash Library! Sadly, the school year is coming to a close and we will need all library books returned. We need ALL WABASH LIBRARY BOOKS returned to the library by Friday, May 9 - the week after the book fair.
Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade who are in good standing with the library will be able to participate in the summer check out program if you sign a parent permission form for your child. Your student will be able to check out up to five library books to keep all summer. Please look for the Summer Check-Out form to come home soon and return it by Monday, May 19, if you want your child to participate.
Also, the book fair continues this week through Friday, May 2, at 12:30 pm. The book fair will close early at 12:30 on Friday so we can take down the book fair and get ready for regular library classes next week. If your student is shopping during the rest of this week, you can make a Scholastic eWallet to pay for books at our Book Fair Homepage. Please remember we are NOT accepting cash at the book fair! You can shop with your student(s) this Thursday, May 1, during the Wabash Art Show from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. We hope to see you there!
Lastly, make sure to visit the public library this summer and join the Summer Challenge to earn prizes! Please check the Public Library's website or look for information coming home soon from our library to learn about the FREE summer reading challenge program! We hope all of our Ducks continue reading this summer! Please let Mrs. Collins know if you have any questions. meghancollins@wsdr4.org

MAP Testing / Summer Planning
MAP Testing
Map Testing started this week for 3rd grade and we are so excited for them to show what they know! Fifth grade will test May 5, 6, and 7. Fourth grade will be testing May 12, 13 and 14. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Please remember how important it is for students to get a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast the morning of testing. We also really appreciate any appointments being scheduled around testing to ensure students are here and ready to test.
Summer Planning
WOW! Another school year has passed. One thing that hasn’t changed is kids’ (and adults’) love for summer. Summer break has a distinct and special meaning in our culture:
Summers are for relaxing
Summers are for sleeping late
Summers are a break from the norm
Summers are a time to recharge and refresh before a new school year
In short, summers are an escape from our regular life. But do they have to be that way entirely? As you look forward to the summer for your student(s) and you consider all the fun options for them while they’re off from school, perhaps consider adding a few things that are not necessarily breaks from regular life in terms of continuing the growth and learning your student experienced this school year. The following are a few suggestions:
Try and maintain a general adherence to a healthy bedtime. There are numerous benefits to getting good sleep. Keeping some semblance of a good bedtime may help your child enjoy better emotional regulation during long summer days. It can also help on days when you have early morning scheduled appointments and events during the summer such as dentist’s visits, church, early travel times and so on.
Use the summer off as a period to learn something new, or to better an existing skill without the pressure of the schedule the school year brings. If your student is in sports, you are very accustomed to this concept through the various sports camps held during the summer. But also consider signing your student up to learn a musical instrument; to learn a foreign language or even participate in some light academic tutoring.
Have your student volunteer doing something they are passionate about. Join them in cleaning a neighborhood park, playing Uno at an assisted living facility or helping out at a sports camp just to name a few activities which can also lead to personal growth during their time off.
Of course, as in anything, try and seek a healthy balance. Enjoy your summer with your student(s) and make the most of the time!
READY FOR FUN IN THE SUN? BE SAFE ABOUT IT!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Sip into Summer! As the sun shines brighter and our days grow warmer, keeping our little ones hydrated and happy is crucial. Water is the best choice for staying hydrated. Encourage kids to sip water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after playtime.
Protect kids’ skin
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children wear sunscreen with at least 15 to 50 SPF. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming, sweating or toweling off, and consider wearing sun protection clothing for an added barrier.
Practice water safety
Whether you’re in a public pool or in your backyard, children should be supervised at all times. Never swim alone and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for your weight and size and the water activity.
Helmet safety
Have your child wear a helmet every time they ride a bike, scooter or skateboard. Helmets reduce serious head injuries by 60%, traumatic brain injury by 53% and the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured by 34%.
If your student has medication at school, please pick it up no later than Tuesday, May 27. Any medication not picked up will be disposed of. Thank you!
Enjoy your summer!
Energy Drinks are Not Cool for School!
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises against caffeine for children under 12 and recommends limiting caffeine intake for older children and teens to 100 mg or less per day, which is less than the amount in many energy drinks.
Children who consume caffeine can have…
Difficulty sleeping
May develop behavioral or mental health issues such as increased aggression, anxiety, stress and depression
Restlessness
Shaking hands/jittery
Stomachaches
Headaches
Nervousness
Irregular heart rhythms and other life-threatening heart-rhythm changes
Energy drinks typically contain large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, other additives, and stimulants (guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine). The stimulants can increase blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing.
In 2011, 1,499 adolescents went to the emergency room for an energy-drink–related emergency.
Please do NOT send your child to school with energy drinks. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
