Maxwell High School of Technology
Spring 2022
Principal's Message
Dear Maxwell supporter,
The end of another school year has arrived. It seems like yesterday we were starting fall semester. COVID created another challenging year, but I am thankful our students, teachers, and staff persevered and made the school year successful. This year has flown by, but it has afforded us the time to celebrate, recognize, reflect, and close the door on a fantastic school year. We had great success with our student organizations: FCCLA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA. Please take a few moments to read about our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student of the Year, Nicole Jackson. Nicole was also runner-up as the Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) CTE Student of the Year. We are very proud of her! We also feature the Student of the Year for all programs, as well as our National Technical Honor Society students. We highlight a neat internship for one of our Manufacturing students and feature Flight Operations students who won first place at the Transportation Education Foundation of Georgia (TEFGA) competition. Maxwell participated in the GCPS Future Teacher Signing Day, and we hope these students return to teach in Gwinnett one day. Be sure to read about all the impressive events happening in our Architecture program. You will also enjoy reading about the culminating Work Ready event: Dining Etiquette in a Business Setting. We are happy to share the success of our Pre-K Read-a-Thon and Parent Night Out! We look forward to hosting Maxwell Summer Adventures for middle school students, a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our programs to potential future students. I wish nothing but success for our seniors, and hope everyone has a relaxing and restful summer. As always, please know our doors are open to you, and thank you for your support. Go Navigators!

GCPS Honors Excellence in Career and Technical Education
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) recognized the work of 26 Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school students on March 22 during the GCPS 2022 CTE Student of the Year awards recognition program. Maxwell's very own Nicole Jackson was awarded First Runner-up! The selection process required nominated students to submit a resume, a letter of recommendation from the nominating teacher, information on participation in a Career and Technical Student Organization, community service, and an essay. The final requirement was an interview conducted by a panel of judges consisting of business and industry leaders.
Nicole is a student in Mrs. Minor's Flight Operations program, and she is also a Maxwell Ambassador, which enables her to promote Maxwell by leading tours at the school. In addition, Nicole competed at the SkillsUSA State Championships in the Applied Communications contest, and she was recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. As CTE First Runner-up, Nicole will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Congratulations, Nicole!
2022 SkillsUSA State Championships
SkillsUSA Georgia held its annual State Leadership and Skills Conference February 24-26. Maxwell High School of Technology had 60 students competing at the State
Championships. Maxwell contestants brought home 15 gold medals, four silver medals, and seven bronze medals. The State Championships allow students to showcase the leadership and skills training they have obtained during the school year. First Place winners advance to the National Championships, which will be held in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center in June. Congratulations to Maxwell’s medalists and good luck to the 1st Place winners competing at the National Championships!

Manufacturing Student Interning at HQNA
Dominic Watson, a student enrolled in the Manufacturing program at Maxwell, has been a Maintenance Tech Intern at Heraeus Quartz North America (HQNA) since October 2021.
Mr. Brandon Myers, Manufacturing instructor, recommended Dominic for the Work-Based Learning opportunity at Heraeus. Dominic also interviewed with Heraeus Operations, Maintenance, and HR before he was awarded the internship. Dominic likes engineering classes the most, and he wants to earn his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. The thing that brought him to Heraeus and got him interested in the internship was initially working in Maxwell's Manufacturing program and seeing how machines work as well as how to better develop the systems that are used to create different products. At Heraeus, Dominic actively job-shadows other experienced maintenance employees and learns how to troubleshoot the systems that they work with on a daily basis. He also organizes the inventory, which helps the company spend less time searching for spare parts. He believes that this internship is the perfect opportunity for him to apply his skills and knowledge to achieve his daily work goals.

Work Ready: Dining Etiquette
After two years of not dining in person at the Work Ready Dining Etiquette session due to the pandemic, an in-person session was hosted this year by the Culinary Arts Program. Chef Williams, Chef Delvasto, and their professional Culinary Arts students hosted and served all 900 Maxwell students for this event. The Culinary Arts program served two different entrées: a breakfast entrée for the morning session and a lunch entrée for the afternoon session. Prior to the dining experience, Maxwell teachers taught business dining etiquette skills to their students so they would be ready for the event. Maxwell counselors, Dr. LaVonna Groce and Ms. Emily Latone, organized the curriculum and schedule for attendance and made sure students and teachers were assigned a time to attend the Work Ready session. It was good to be back in person for Work Ready Dining Etiquette, and our students, faculty, and staff enjoyed this learning experience.
