The Soaring Eagle News (Week 10)
Week 10 (10/28- 11/01)
Happy Fantastic Friday!!
We have officially wrapped up our first nine weeks of school, and it has been an absolute blast! Our Eagles are hard at work daily, building their success, and we couldn’t be prouder of how they’re thriving. Seeing all of our students and staff dressed up in costumes was so much fun. We also celebrated our October “Soaring Eagles,” who were recognized for embodying the “O” in S.O.A.R., which stands for Optimistic! As we move into November, our focus will shift to the “A” for Accountable. Being accountable means taking responsibility for our actions, words, and choices, which helps build a safe and supportive community where everyone can rely on one another to make positive choices. Let’s work together to foster accountability at school and home!
Our PBIS celebration capped off an amazing first quarter. So many students earned the opportunity to participate by embodying our Alderman Core Values of being a Scholar, Optimistic, Accountable, and Respectful each day. Let’s keep this fantastic momentum going as we enter the second quarter!

Parent Corner: Math Fluency
Supporting your child’s math skills can be fun and easy when you incorporate math into everyday activities! Counting change, measuring ingredients while cooking, or discussing the time are simple ways to show children the relevance of math. Younger children might enjoy practicing addition or subtraction with dice, building familiarity with numbers and confidence. Mastering foundational math facts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division allows children to focus on problem-solving rather than basic calculations when tackling new concepts.
For older children, activities like calculating discounts or tracking data can enhance analytical skills. These everyday opportunities help build a positive attitude toward math and set a solid foundation for their future learning.

Low Performing School Status
The purpose of the following letter is to inform you that Alderman Elementary, has been designated as a low-performing school by the North Carolina State Board of Education. Alderman Elementary received a School Performance Grade of D and a growth designation of met expected growth for the 2023–2024 school year. Although we are committed to improving this score, it is important to remember that just as no one single score or grade tells the whole story of a student, neither does it tell you everything about the performance of a school or the opportunities that our school provides.
Please click the picture below to read more about our status and what we are doing to improve for the 24-25 school year.

Volunteer Information
All volunteers, both Levels 1 and 2, must complete volunteer training each school year.
We love our volunteers! Whether you want to assist in a classroom, lead a small group, attend a field trip, or simply help in an area around the school, we need you to complete the application process to ensure you are either a Level 1 or Level 2 volunteer!
Our Level I volunteers work under the continual supervision of school staff. If willing to serve our school as a Level I Volunteer, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Read all of the information in this presentation, Volunteer Orientation, and the NHCS Volunteer Handbook (we will get this to you as soon as it becomes available).
- Complete the Volunteer Orientation Assessment with a score of 80% or higher.
After completing Level I certification and if you are willing to complete Level II requirements, please complete a Background Check Application. Background checks cost $22.50 and are valid for three (3) years. Our Level 2 Volunteers may work alone with students and may not always be with a staff member.
General Guidelines after receiving district clearance to serve as a volunteer:
- Please have your photo ID ready when coming to campus to either sign in.
- When volunteering, please respect the instructional day and stay within your volunteer area.
