Oakland Through the Ages Celebration
Recap and Thank You!
Last Friday night we had a great turnout for the Oakland Through the Ages: 100 Years of Excellence Celebration. Our time capsule is packed and stowed away for 2074. A huge "Thank You" to all who planned, participated in, and attended the event. To view the official centennial video, click the time capsule to the side. I have also included below pictures of our Chalk Talk "What is your favorite memory of Oakland?"
ROHS Homecoming!
The ROHS Homecoming Parade, Tailgate, and Football Game are Friday, October 11th at Royal Oak High School! The festivities kickoff at 5pm with the Homecoming Parade that cruises down Lexington Blvd. The parade features the ROHS Marching Band, cheer team, dance team, and homecoming court as well as many clubs, sports teams, and other organizations at the high school. It ends in front of the stadium where there is a tailgate open to the entire community that includes free food, live music, games, and other fun activities. After the tailgate, please join us as we cheer on the ROHS Ravens Varsity Football Team as they take on Pontiac. Game starts at 7pm.
Thank you,
ROHS Student Council
Lockdown Drill
This week at Oakland we had our first shelter-in-place drill, more commonly known as a "Lockdown Drill". We are deeply committed to making sure everyone is safe. Lockdown Drills are a necessary precaution that we take a few time a year in order to practice what we would do in extreme circumstances. It can be scary to think about for adults and kids. When we talk about the drills in school, teachers focus on what we do to shelter-in-place, keep all conversation positive and light, and avoid "what if" questions. There is a natural curiosity of what types of danger could put us in a Lockdown. The reality is that any specific scenarios we offer in explanation have greater potential to generate more fear and anxiety. When asked, we do not avoid the question, we simply explain that people sometimes have uncontrollable feelings, make poor choices, and create unsafe situations for themselves and others. These are hard to predict so we practice what we will do to avoid other people's unsafe situations.
I have included some links below if you would like to read a little more about how to talk about this with your kids.

Birthday Recognition
Consistent with health and wellness goals and cognizant of various student and staff allergies, Royal Oak Elementary schools recognize student birthdays with non-food-based celebrations. We do recognize birthdays as special days and will recognize a child’s birthday with individual recognition by the classroom teacher. Each teacher will inform you of the specific classroom birthday recognition practice. The students will also have their names announced on the school broadcast and receive a birthday pencil from the office. Please do NOT send food or beverages as birthday treats.
Blessings in a Backpack:
“Blessings in a Backpack” is designed to provide students on the free and reduced lunch program with enough food for three meals daily on weekends. Administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, this program is active in Royal Oak Schools. If you agree to participate in this program during the school year, your child will receive a bag of food for the weekend. A food bag will be put in your child's locker for take-home on Fridays. The simple meals may include macaroni and cheese, beef ravioli, canned fruit, granola bars, soups, juice, and other items. Students will receive a bag every week.
If you want your child to participate in this program, complete the sign-up form with this link. Please be sure to indicate on the form if your child has any food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, you, as the parent or guardian, are responsible for checking all food labels when the food arrives home. Royal Oak School and Blessings in a Backpack will not be held accountable for accidental food allergen exposure.
Please fill out a new form for each child you want to participate. You will see a link to submit another response upon form submission.
