Healthy Food Choices
School Breakfast and Lunch are great ways to help students eat healthy. (Just a reminder that if your children would like to enjoy school breakfast, please drop them off at 8:20 when the gates open so that they have time to eat. The breakfast line closes at 8:30.)
We strongly discourage families from sending in food treats for birthdays. We have a number of students with severe allergies and other dietary restrictions. Please check with the teacher for individual class protocols before sending in treats. If you want to celebrate a birthday, please consider ways other than food - like donating a book or ball - for the classroom.
Classroom parties will follow nutritional guidelines from the District.
PUSD Closed Campus Policy
PUSD campuses will remain ‘closed campuses’ to ensure safety of our students and staff. On the first day of school only, parents/guardians will be able to walk their child(ren) to class or the field. Beginning August 22, all children will be dropped off and picked up at the gate at all campuses.
Parking Lot Reminders - CROSSWALK & GREEN CONE ZONE
- Parking in our lot? Cross ONLY at the Cross-Walk, located near the Flag Pole in the center of the lot.
- The GREEN CONE ZONE is the assisted loading/unloading area for our Special Needs students ONLY. If your child requires curb-side assistance from our staff, please make arrangements with their Teacher so staff can meet you there. Unless you have received special authorization to use the GREEN CONE ZONE, please refrain from parking or loading/unloading in this area.

Picture Books for Our Families, Ms. Alice Burge's Monthly Book Recommendations
The month of September brings many opportunities to honor, remember and celebrate, including Patriot Day and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month!
Fireboat by Maira Kalman
Lucia the Luchadora by Cynthia Leonor Garza
From mid-September into October, we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month.
Lucía zips through the playground in her cape just like the boys, but when they tell her "girls can't be superheroes," suddenly she doesn't feel so mighty. That's when her beloved abuela reveals a dazzling secret: Lucía comes from a family of luchadoras, the bold and valiant women of the Mexican lucha libre tradition. Cloaked in a flashy new disguise, Lucía returns as a recess sensation! But when she's confronted with a case of injustice, Lucía must decide if she can stay true to the ways of the luchadora and fight for what is right, even if it means breaking the sacred rule of never revealing the identity behind her mask. A story about courage and cultural legacy brought to life by author Cynthia Leonor Garza and illustrator Alyssa Bermudez, Lucía the Luchadora is full of pluck, daring, and heart.
Danza! by Duncan Tonatiuh
In the picture book Danza!, award-winning author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh tells the story of Amalia Hernández, dancer and founder of El Ballet Folklórico de México. As a child, Amalia saw a pair of dancers in the town square. The way they stomped and swayed to the rhythm of the beat inspired her. She knew one day she would become a dancer. Amalia studied ballet and modern dance under the direction of skilled teachers who had performed in world-renowned dance companies. But she never forgot the folk dance she had seen years earlier.
She began traveling through the Mexican countryside, witnessing the dances of many regions, and she used her knowledge of ballet and modern dance to adapt the traditional dances to the stage. She founded her own dance company, a group that became known as El Ballet Folklórico de México. Using his signature illustration style, inspired by the ancient art of the Mixtecs, Tonatiuh tells the story of Amalia Hernández and the formation of one of the most famous and successful dance companies in the world.
