Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
This week, students will finish reading Inside Out & Back Again, and begin to consider whether the United States lives up to is promise as stated in “The New Colossus.” Students resume ReadingPlus homework this week. The May Independent Reading task is posted on CANVAS. If students did not complete the IOBA - Part 3 Summary Collection and the 3 IOBA Graphic Novel Poems, they should complete them over the weekend and turn them in on Wednesday, May 15. A copy of the text is available on SORA (Clever) and CANVAS.
Mr. O'Malley, Math 6 and 7
Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
We closed out the week with students creating their Own Economic Systems. They got to decide on their transportation, business, public services, and environmental policies. They named their countries and designed their own flag!
This week, we will begin a project, not a new unit. We will start our International Museum projects. Students will be tasked with creating an “artifact” (project) to showcase a topic of their choosing, highlighting something about Ireland (our team's name). We will begin with some brainstorming in class. They will be given expectations and guidance about research, notes and their annotated bibliographies. They will gather their own materials and be given time IN and OUT of class to complete the steps of this project.
The final project will be due Wednesday, May 22nd. I WILL TEACH/GUIDE/CHECK-IN, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR DEADLINES AND EXPECTATIONS AS THEY WILL NEED TO SELF PACE AND SELF REGULATE THEIR TIME.
On May 24th, our Geography classroom will have been transformed into the Museum of Ireland. Student work will be on display and viewed by school staff, other 6th grade teams, and open to families after school for you to see your students work on display.
Ms. Osman, Science
Hi, Super Scientists!
Congratulations to all students on successfully completing the DC Cape Testing! We still have Science Growth Testing to do, but that won’t be this week! As we move forward, our journey of learning continues with a focus on human impacts here and in space. With future travel in mind, we must think about cleaning up our space trash. That means our next week will be all about our famous Space Trash Cleanup project!
Students will be planning, designing, and creating a prototype of a machine that will clean up our orbital space to make space travel safer. They will be presenting their projects to the class on Monday, 20 May. I will provide glue, tape, craft sticks and construction paper. Students may only bring clean “Trash” like cardboard, tin foil, plastic cups, pipe cleaners, plastic wrap, food containers. I repeat – this must be clean trash. If you have cans, all food must be washed out and rough edges smoothed. NO GLASS! Plastic containers are fine IF it is part of the student’s design. Parents MAY NOT print 3D parts. Any cloth must be clean. Ditto for egg cartons, aseptic boxes, flat ware or straws. Do not expect to see any of the material again UNLESS you are a judge!
I need judges for the following times, please! The time listed is the time the class starts so please plan on arriving 15 minutes prior! No payment, but a free cup of coffee or tea if you bring a cup.
This project is a BIG DEAL! So please dress and act accordingly.
First period: 0940 5-6 adults (at least one Spanish speaker)
Second period: 0949 3-4 adults
Fourth period: 1139 4-5 adults
Sixth period: 1329 (1:29 pm) 5 adults
Seventh period: 1424 (2:24 pm) 6 adults (at least one Spanish speaker)
Please plan on staying for an hour so that you can complete your grade sheet with comments. If there are enough judges, judges will rotate through several presentations – just like a Science Fair. You will have a grade sheet for each one. Every project will receive a stress test administered by an impartial observer. The students will have fun!
This is a great time and you will see what you haven’t seen. Please support your student.
A reminder that students will face their final weekly roots quiz on Friday, May 17th, so please ensure they dedicate time to studying their roots words throughout this week. Additionally, it's prudent for students to begin reviewing all term 4 vocabulary to adequately prepare for the upcoming summative assessment later this term.
Roots Words:
Phono = sound, voice (telephone)
Homo = same (homonym)
-onym =word, name (synonym)
Endo = within (endoskeleton)
Neuro = nerve (neurological)
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
Students finished reading the book The Crossover and received a summative grade for their summaries of the poems in the last section. This week students will resume System 44. We paused our work when students didn’t have access to their school computers.
