Mrs. Looney-Kanz & Mrs. Merlo:
This week with Mrs. Looney-Kanz:
Kindergarten: Students will continue to learn about artist, Jasper Johns. Students will begin to create a piece inspired by Jasper Johns on watercolor paper. Students will draw numbers and apply warm and cool oil pastels to their numbers.
1st Grade: Students will continue to be inspired Brooklyn artist, Rose Lazar. Students will create their own floral paintings using neon paints. Students will create six large flowers and blend colors together while applying patterned details. Students will cut out their vase and their painted flowers and apply them to a paper background.
2nd Grade: Students will continue to learn about artist, Yayoi Kusama! Students will begin creating a repeated pattern of printed circles on bright paper. Students will then continue their circle patterns by applying bright marker circles all over their empty space.
3rd Grade: Students will learn about Australian artist, Anna Blatman. Students will observe her colorful and vibrant landscape paintings. Students will observer a variety of landscapes and sketch in their sketchbooks using bright colors.
4th Grade: Students will continue to learn about Virginia Beach artist, Ryan McGuinness. Students will observe his icon/symbol created artworks and think about their future goals and sketch them into their own represented symbols. Students will begin to draw their final symbols for their goals on their foam printing plates.
5th Grade: Students are continuing to learn about California artist, Lili Arnold. Students will begin to print their native floral stamps. Students will be using printing ink and experiment with colored papers.
This week with Mrs. Merlo:
Kindergarten: Students learned about value and talked about our 3 color patterns as we finished the background for our paper mola weavings.
2nd Grade: Students finished our Ming Vase using sharpie for our lines, creating an animal in the middle and adding patterns & designs inspired by the culture.
4th Grade: Students learned about value and talked about 3 colors next to each other on the color wheel to make a watercolor blend for our African Mask project.

All library books are due MAY 30TH! Please work with your student to return books by the deadline. Students who return all books on time will receive a raffle ticket to win a "summer fun gift bag"! Winners will be announced on the morning news show during the last week of school. Email and paper reminders are sent as needed. Please contact wendy.ricci@lcps.org with any questions.
In the next couple of weeks, students in grades K-5 will get ready for summer reading and participate in Reader's Theater! A librarian from the Loudoun County Public Library will visit our Star Readers on June 6th to introduce the summer reading program "Rock at the Library." If you're looking for an excellent source of ideas for summer reading, check out https://imaginationsoup.net/
During Reader's Theater, ask your child which Folk Tale their class is working on and which character they have been selected to read!

We are so proud of our 4th and 5th Grade STAR Chorus students on an excellent concert this past Thursday! Thank you to everyone who came out in support of our STAR Singers.
ATTENTION 4TH AND 5TH GRADE STARS: If you are interested in performing in this year's talent show, FDE's Got Talent, applications are due by the end of this week Friday, May 24th. Auditions will take place next week on Wednesday, May 29th from 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM in the music room.

Mr. Oakley & Mr. Huddleston:
It's finally here.... FIELD DAY on May 31t! For the next few weeks, we are going to cover the stations that will be part of field day. Cooperation games, relay races, skill challenges, and more!
New for fifth grade this year, we will be training for the 5th grade vs staff kickball game in June. We will cover all the details of kickball/base games and how use strategy and teamwork to be successful. Can't wait to see you in the gym.

School Counseling Update:
Every parent should have received an email with their child's academic and career plan. Please log on to Schoollinks to review and sign this plan.
In school counseling this week, kindergarten and 2nd trade students will be talking about transitions as we begin to think about next school year. We will be thinking about what the last few days of school will look like and talking about some things that will make the transition into the next school year easier. 1st grade students this week will be focusing on the topics of goal setting and coping skills.
3rd grade students will be learning about mistakes and that it is ok to make mistakes. Mistakes are what help us learn and grow. 4th grade students will be learning about integrity through a fun interactive integrity challenge lesson. 5th grade students will continue to focus on the transition into middle school and will start to learn how to use combination locks for their lockers!
