NYOS Elementary Newsletter
September 19th, 2024
As we conclude an exciting first quarter, I want to take a moment to reflect on all the wonderful activities we've experienced together. Our first pep rally was a fantastic way to build school spirit, and the student led parent-teacher conferences were invaluable for fostering strong connections between home and school. Additionally, our curriculum showcase allowed us to highlight the incredible learning happening in our classrooms.
With fall break upon us, I encourage everyone to take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy quality moments with family and friends. Whether you’re traveling or staying home, I hope you find joy in these two weeks!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on October 8th, ready to embrace the next quarter with enthusiasm and dedication. We have a lot to look forward to in quarter two!
Wishing you a wonderful break!

Responsibility
Focusing can be a challenge and takes practice! We are learning focusing strategies alongside Responsibility. Focusing on a task, instructions, or even a conversation helps us practice Responsibility and be more successful.
Strategies to focus our minds:
- Breathe it out (take a nice deep breath and remind yourself to pay attention)
- Move it out (get a drink or get some wiggles out, then refocus)
- Ignore or move away from distractions Remind your student about these strategies at home when they are having trouble focusing!
Elementary Counselors:
Grades PK, K, 2nd, 4th Joy Pollock, jpollock@nyos.org
Grades 1st, 3rd, 5th Ashley Mendenhall, amendenhall@nyos.org
Social Emotional Learning Teacher:
Amanda Ayala, aayala@nyos.org
SEL Class Focus
We learn/practice a new calming strategy every time we have SEL class and a recent tool we practiced using was calm down jars/sensory bottles. Many students expressed wanting to make their own at home. You can use household items including old water bottles/jars, glitter, beads, and more to make them. You can also search online for DIY sensory bottles for more ideas. These are great to have at home as an additional tool for your student to use when they feel angry, sad, or overwhelmed.
