Cole Miners' Dig
October 11, 2024
Principal's Notes
It's been another wonderful week of learning at Cole School! We kicked the week of with the first Connections meeting of the year where students heard the story Jabari Tries by Gaia Cornwall and discussed the Habit of Mind of PERSISTENCE together. Students met for bus meetings this week to review expected behaviors with Mrs. Benner. Thanks to the PTO for funding the field trip to Magical Moon Farm in Marshfield for second grade students this week.
It has come to our attention that there are students at Cole School that have created YouTube channels. As a point of information for parents, to create a YouTube account, users must be at least 13 years old. Users between the ages of 13 and 17 can create an account with parental permission. The District Attorney's office presented the CyberSense internet safety presentation on Tuesday night and warned against students having social media accounts, especially ones that are public. For more information, the DA's office suggested looking into NetSmartz from NECMEC as a great resource for parents: NetSmartz Home (missingkids.org).
Please consider joining us for this Parent Book Discussion Group. We highly encourage parents of children in PreK-2 to participate and attend before children get to grades 3-5 when many get their first device at home. All are welcome! Many thanks to Norwell Education Foundation for purchasing six copies of the book for families to borrow. Please let me know if you are interested in borrowing a copy.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. We use the Bullying Prevention curriculum from Second Step- you can see their great resources here. In SEL time, we finished our Respect unit. We practiced: following directions the first time (Kindergarten), filling other people's buckets (1st), working as a team (2nd), coming up with respectful solutions to problems (3rd and 5th), and using respectful body language (4th).
If your child(ren) would benefit from a divorce/separation support group with peers experiencing the same thing, please reach out to me at Anne.walsh@norwellschools.org. I would like to start this program if there’s enough interest.

Specialists' Scoop
Kindergarteners used bean bags/fleece balls to toss and catch underhand with a partner. Practiced throwing underhand at a target on the wall. Grade 1 were throwing and catching with partners underhand, overhand and at targets. Played Toilet Tag! Grade 2 warmed up with a game of pickle, practiced lead passes and played a fun throwing game called Farming Frenzy. Practicing their throwing, students turned into farmers to fill up chicken coops/buckets with eggs/balls. Grades 3-5 played a throwing and catching game called Team Handball. Limited to 3 steps/3 seconds and working together as a team, students tried to throw the ball into the opposing team’s net while defending their own net.

Please join the NHS Fourth Wall Players for their first show of the season! Guys and Dolls is musical comedy about big city gamblers and the women who love them. It intertwines the tales of high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls for mission worker Sarah Brown, and the charming Nathan Detroit, who has been engaged to Miss Adelaide, a headliner at the Hot Box Club, for 14 years. Nathan is known for running a famous floating crap game, and much of the plot revolves around his search for a safe location for the game while Adelaide persistently tries to convince him to marry her. Meanwhile, Sarah, mistakenly believing that Sky organized an illegal game at the mission, struggles with her growing affection for the charismatic gambler. Praised by TIME Magazine as “the greatest of all American musicals!” and hailed by The New York Times as “the show that defines Broadway dazzle,” this musical fable of Broadway promises an unforgettable evening at the theatre. Guys and Dolls is rated PG for mild adult humor. Run time is approximately 2 hours 15 mins, which includes an intermission. This is an upbeat musical comedy that everyone can enjoy.
