Daylight Savings Time this Weekend!
Clocks fall back an hour this weekend! The fall time change can cause younger kids to crash before bedtime and wake up earlier than usual in the morning (and be a little cranky the hours in between!).
There are some ways to help kids adjust to the time change! Focus on good sleep habits, such as:
- Limit Screen Time: Have children put away all screens (phones, tablets, TV) at least an hour before bedtime to avoid blue light interference and temptations to check messages.
- Establish Nighttime Routines: Create a calming routine that signals to the child's body that it's time to wind down, such as a brushing, book, and bed routine.
- Encourage Daily Exercise: Ensure children get enough physical activity during the day, but avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime; opt for calming activities like stretching or yoga in the evening.
- Get Natural Light: Spend time outdoors during the day to help reset the child's internal clock, especially after time changes.
- Engage in Relaxing Evening Activities: Promote a healthy sleep cycle with activities like warm baths, reading, meditation, soft music, or journaling.
While time changes can cause some drowsy days, kids usually adjust within about a week. If your child continues to have problems sleeping, talk with your pediatrician.
