Health Class @ LME with Ms. Stacy

Dear Families of Primary Students (grades K-2),

We hope your child has been enjoying Health class this year. We would like to provide you with some information about these potentially sensitive topics our curriculum will be covering in the winter months.

Body Privacy — We will learn anatomically correct terms for private parts, and the difference between safe touches (e.g. high-fives or hugs) and unsafe touches. Students will learn refusal skills and how to say, “No!” This type of education has been shown to be effective in preventing child abuse.

Please contact me in January if you have any questions or concerns, or would like information about opting-out procedures. I will teach this lesson the week of February 3-7 for kindergarten and 2nd grade. I will teach this lesson the week of March 3-7 for 1st grade.

Dear Families of Intermediate Students (grades 3-5),

We hope your child has been enjoying health class this year. We would like to provide you with some information about potentially sensitive topics our curriculum is covering. If you have any questions or concerns or would like to review the lessons for the topics identified below, please contact me.

Puberty — Students will learn about the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Students will also learn about internal and external reproductive anatomy. Instruction will occur in the co-ed health classroom.

Tolerance — Students will be talking about respect and the harmful effects of bullying. Students will discuss the importance of respectful social interaction with all people, despite any differences in race, gender identity, sexual orientation or beliefs.

HIV — Students in 4th and 5th grade only will learn about the HIV virus and how to prevent infection.

Sexual Harassment/Privacy — Students will learn about body privacy, refusal skills, and the importance of reporting sexual harassment.

This week we will continue unit 3. We will demonstrate steps to getting ready for a meal. Students will demonstrate hand washing. We will predict what might happen if hands or food aren't washed.

This week we are continuing Unit 6. We will describe the role of the dentist in keeping a person healthy. Kindergarteners will give at least three reasons why it is very important to take good care of one's teeth. We will practice establishing good habits of brushing and flossing one's teeth. Finally, we predict the consequences of having no teeth.

This week we are continuing Unit 6. Students will identify situations that can evoke anger and discover helpful ways to deal with these events and feelings. We will show why it is important for people to think before they act, especially when they are mad. First graders will practice ways to talk things out or work things out nonviolently. Finally we will compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy ways to behave when angry.

This week we are continuing Unit 6. We will describe some of the changes that can happen in families and some of the effects of those changes. Students will show ways to be responsible for helping oneself and others when family changes occur. Second graders will role-play major changes that might happen to families and ways one can help. Finally, we will analyze how a major family change, such as moving to a new town or adding a new baby, would affect each member of the family.

Fifth graders will show empathy, respect, and support for others who are going through puberty. Students will practice hygiene routines for enhanced health and analyze the effect on your self-esteem. Finally we will analyze how society and the media can influence ideas about self-esteem and body image.
