Spring is in the air, and professional learning is in full-swing! This semester has been filled with wonderful learning opportunities; don't miss out on sessions that will build your skill and expertise in the classroom! Also, watch for our listing of summer professional learning sessions that will be released in April. We are planning for a great summer that includes ARI, AMSTI, ASIM, and ATIM opportunities, as well as many sessions to target special education, mental health, social-emotional learning, and more!

Congratulations to our ASIM UA/UWA physics specialist, Mrs. Julie Covin, for being featured as the "Specialist in the Spotlight." Julie has 27 years of experience in education and supports physics teachers within our 12-district region. Thank you, Julie, for all that you do for the teachers in our region!

AMSTI DLCS Robotics Partnership with Tuscaloosa City Schools

AMSTI UA/UWA and Tuscaloosa City Schools have partnered to train cohorts of teachers in applying DLCS standards and instruction in the use of current robots and devices present in Tuscaloosa City Schools. Exciting opportunities for these students and teachers!

10th Annual Tech Meet Tuscaloosa: May 29, 2020--Registration is open!

Mark your calendars for the 10th Annual Tech Meet Tuscaloosa! For the first time, this free event will be held at the Bryant Conference Center on The University of Alabama campus. West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference--Open for Registration!

Calling all school counselors in the UA/UWA Region!


We are excited to announce that registration in PowerSchool is open for the 1st Annual West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference on Monday, June 22, 2020 at the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center (260 Kilgore Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401). Registration will be open at 8:00 am, and the first session will begin at 8:30 am.

This free opportunity is available to all K-12 school counselors in our region. (If space allows, we will open the event throughout the state.) A steering committee of counselors from both the north, central, and southern portions of our region have worked diligently to plan sessions based upon the needs reflected in our recent survey. These sessions include ethics updates for counselors, PowerSchool updates, data-driven programs, mental health, behavioral interventions, and social-emotional learning. We are also providing for one block of round-table sessions to which counselors can share ideas and network with colleagues throughout the region. Featured speakers are Dr. Amy Upton, Mr. Sean Stevens, and Dr. Greg Benner.

Free breakfast and lunch will also be provided from our gracious sponsors!

Join us for this first session with Dr. LeeAnn Jung, CEO of Lead Inclusion and lead author of Your Students, My Students, Our Students: Rethinking Equitable and Inclusive Classrooms. Dr. Jung is also a clinical professor at San Diego State University with her co-authors, Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. She provides support in the areas of inclusion, standards-based learning and grading, designing individualized and goals and interdisciplinary supports, and measuring progress. She has authored 6 books, more than 45 journal articles and book chapters, and has been awarded more than 4 million dollars in federal funding.


This will be the first in a two-part learning cohort. After the session on July 22, participants will leave with strategies for application within their school teams. Participants will return in October for a follow-up session with Dr. Jung. School teams (consisting of an administrator and multiple teachers) are encourage to attend! Session is limited to 75 participants, and books will be provided by the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center.

National Board Candidate Support Cohort offered in Marengo County--it's not too late to join!

  • Thanks to an increase from the ALSDE in our National Board Candidate Support funding, a new National Board cohort began in November in the southern part of our region.
  • Our next sessions will be on Monday, March 2 at 4:00 pm at the Marengo County Board of Education.

Alabama History Institutes are immersive professional development opportunities in history and civics for all public, private, and homeschool K-12 educators in Alabama. Each workshop will incorporate intensive classroom training and interactive, hands-on experiences. Participants will receive a stipend and professional development credit.

Literacy Reimagined Inaugural Conference: March 2020

The following literacy conference is being sponsored by the South Alabama Regional In-Service Center. Registration is open to all In-Service Centers throughout the state. The conference will be at the USA Gulf Shores Campus in March 2020. The cost of the two day conference is $175.00 per person. A few of the keynote speakers include Natalie Wexler, author of the Knowledge Gap, and Nancy Young, creator of the Ladder of Reading.

Please join us, along with our Governing Board members, for the Spring Governing Board Meeting on April 28 at our Regional In-Service Center (Tom Barnes Building, 260 Kilgore Lane). Summer learning providers will be on hand to share learning opportunities and answer any questions.

  • Each of these regional meetings, beginning with October 15, will occur 2-3 weeks after the ALSDE's Curriculum and Instruction meetings. The purpose of this timing is so that we may discuss specific items, updates, data, and requests for support based upon the information shared at the ALSDE meetings.

Brainspring Phonics First Training: June 1-5

Brainspring Phonics First Level I training will be held the week of June 1-5 at the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center. This 5 day/30 hour training qualifies teachers to bring Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory instruction to their K-5 classrooms. The cost of this week-long training is $1,295 per person (classroom materials set included). Registration for courses at brainspring.com/courses. Brainspring will be responsible for all training registration.
