Week of October 7, 2024:
GHS Building Wide Testing Day: What is My Plan?
SENIORS: As you are aware, Tuesday is our building wide testing date for students grades 9-11. You all have a few choices for the day, but you will not be in attendance here at GHS on Tuesday, October 8. It will be a day that you can spend taking care of some things you need to to prepare for graduation and beyond. (This is for senior students who attend GHS during the school day--Oaks students and CCP students will follow their typical daily schedule as we cannot excuse you from classes elsewhere.) Please take a look at your options below:
Seniors in the building will participate in at least one of the following activities on Tuesday, October 8:
Completing community service hours (forms in guidance)
Working on college applications and/or scholarship applications
Conducting career or college research using SchooLinks (via Clever)
Job Shadow/College Visit (forms in guidance)
Study session to complete work/missing work, projects, etc.
Seniors in the building are to complete the Google survey to designate which task they will be completing so they are not marked as unexcused absences.
JUNIORS: Juniors will take a full length practice ACT test in the morning to help prepare for the actual spring school day ACT administration offered in March at NO CHARGE to you! It is super important that you take the practice ACT seriously and try your very best, as we use the results of the practice test to help better prepare you for the spring ACT. The ACT predicts college and career readiness--so even if you aren't sure that you are attending college, taking the test seriously helps you learn about your strengths and also areas of refinement to help you get ready for future careers!
You will take the test in your Warrior Up classroom. When you report to school, grab breakfast then head straight to Warrior Up. Testing begins promptly at 7:30 am so it is important you are here and on time! There will be no make up session. If you arrive late, you will not be permitted to join the room to test as that is an ACT rule and it is not allowed. There will be lunch, then afternoon classes that you will attend once the test session is finished. Click on the link to locate your testing location: Test Day Rosters Oct 8 2024
Sophomores: Tuesday, October 8th you will be participating in our school wide testing day. Last year on this day you took the PreACT 8/9 as a freshman. This year as a sophomore you will do the PSAT in October and then the PreACT in March. You will take the PSAT in your Warrior Up classroom and you will be there for bells 1-5. All students will then go to bells 6 and 7 to end the day. Please read the information below on the PSAT so that you are prepared for next week! The PSAT is a practice SAT, which is a type of College Entrance Exam similar to the ACT. As the ACT and the SAT are different versions of a college entrance exam, some students may perform higher on the SAT than the ACT due to different strengths and testing styles. Taking the PSAT and getting a score report that details your performance on this practice test can help you decide if taking the SAT would be a benefit to you and your future plans. If this is the case, you can register to take the real SAT anytime by going to https://mysat.collegeboard.org/login and creating an account, selecting your test date and location, and paying the required registration fee. In addition to the PSAT being a great practice college entrance exam, it is also used to identify AP courses that you could be successful in as future courses. Along with your PSAT results you will receive an AP Potential Letter which lists any and all Advanced Placement courses that you would most likely be successful in based on your performance on different parts of the test. This is very helpful when making course decisions for junior and senior year!
Lastly, the PSAT allows students to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Although you must be a junior to be considered for this honorable program, taking the PSAT as a sophomore allows you to practice the PSAT. Next year as a junior you will be offered the opportunity to take the PSAT again in order to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship program. All juniors who perform at a high level (in the top bracket of national scores) on the PSAT/NMSQT are automatically entered into consideration for the National Merit Scholarship program. If you are identified as a semifinalist by College Board based on your PSAT score from junior year, you are then offered an opportunity to complete an application which could potentially allow you to qualify as a National Merit Finalist, which can mean significant scholarship opportunities for college. In order to qualify for this program, students must be a junior in high school and take the PSAT. Please go to the following website to learn more about the PSAT. You can click on "Why Take the PSAT" to learn more information about all the benefits of taking the PSAT as well as more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program. https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt

Freshmen: Tuesday, October 8th all 9th graders will be taking the PreACT 8/9 which is a practice ACT test, which is a college entrance exam. This test will allow you to receive a score which will be a prediction score for future ACT testing, as all students are given the opportunity to take the actual ACT, for free and during the school day, in the Spring of their junior year. On Tuesday, October 8th you will report directly to your testing location (email will be coming out soon with room rosters and it will also be posted in the hallways Tuesday morning). You will remain in your testing room (for most students this will be your Warrior Up classroom) for bells 1-5 and then all students will report to bells 6 and 7 to end the day. Please take your time on this practice test and do your absolute best as decisions are made over the next few years regarding courses offered, tutoring opportunities, and course placement based on the results of these practice tests. Attention Juniors! PSAT/NMSQT testing is coming soon to those who would like to sign up. Read the following information below carefully as this test can be an important scholarship opportunity! We will have building wide testing on Tuesday, October 8th. On this date, all juniors will be taking the practice ACT but you can choose to take the PSAT instead as participating in the PSAT as a junior allows you to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship program. Juniors who perform at a high level (in the top bracket of national scores) on the PSAT/NMSQT are automatically entered into consideration for the National Merit Scholarship program. If you are identified as a semifinalist by College Board based on your PSAT score from junior year, you are then offered an opportunity to complete an application which could potentially allow you to qualify as a National Merit Finalist, which can mean significant scholarship opportunities for college. In order to qualify for this program, students must be a junior in high school and take the PSAT on October 8th. Juniors interested in taking the PSAT in order to attempt to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship program MUST EMAIL their school counselor (Mrs. Royal royalk@goshenlocalschools.org for last names A-K or Mrs. Mantz mantzk@goshenlocalschools.org for last names L-Z) in order to be added to this testing list no later than Friday, September 27th. All other juniors on October 8th will be taking a practice ACT test, so if you do not email a request to take the PSAT then you will automatically be on the list to take the practice ACT. Please go to the following website to learn more about the PSAT/NMSQT. You can click on "Why Take the PSAT" to learn more information about all the benefits of taking the PSAT as well as more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program. https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt

Cell Phones: House Bill 250, which was signed into law by Governor DeWine, limits the use of cell phones and other wireless devices in our schools. Goshen Local Schools agrees with the research behind HB250 and with limiting the distractions that cell phone use creates for our students. With that in mind, below are the proposed changes to our cell phone practices and student handbook policies for the 2024-2025 school year, pending Board approval. Students are permitted to have cell phones on campus. Students are not permitted to use phones during class time or to take phones to the restroom. The expectation is for cell phones and wireless earbuds/headphones/AirPods to be put away and silenced in the classroom unless documented in IEP/504 or for documented health concerns. Students may access their devices before school, during lunch, and after school. To ensure compliance with these guidelines, the following consequences will be enforced:
Consequence for violating cellphone guidelines
1st offense (Classroom) - warning provided and parent contacted by teacher
2nd offense (Strike 1 in Office) - phone sent to office, parent contacted, and student can pick up phone from office at the end of the day
3rd offense (Strike 2 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and conversation is had about the repercussions if a student earns Strike 3.
4th offense (Strike 3 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and the device is not permitted to return to the school building for a designated amount of time up to and including the rest of the school year.
Chronic abuse of cell phone privileges will result in appropriate disciplinary measures up to and including suspension from school.
