Luce Notes
Principal Weekly Update to Caregivers
Principal Lamour Update
We are gearing up for our first SHINE assembly on Friday! Per our tradition, we are asking that students wear Canton green on Friday! Please see the following highlights in this week's Luce Notes.
- The Tavern in Dedham raised $1,799 for the Luce through a dining fundraiser hosted by our very own Tom Weadock! Phenomenal job, Tom and Luce community!
- The first half-day is this Wednesday, September 18. School hours are from 8:20-11:50 am. Please take note of this change to be prepared for pickup.
- Remember to review the NEW District updates regarding PowerSchool regarding demographic verification and District permissions and other reminders in the final section of the newsletter
- Universal Screening: Students in grades 1-5 will be participating in STAR testing this week or next. This STAR 360 Assessment is our universal screener that helps us identify current performance levels and will be administered three times this year to monitor progress and growth. This assessment is given on an ipad or chromebook and is adaptive so it will adjust as students answer questions correctly or incorrectly. Family reports will go home in the next couple of weeks with information on your child's Fall screening results and possible next steps.
- We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from 9/15-10/15. Please see the resources linked here to learn more about this wonderful celebration of culture.
- Please sign up for the First School bus parent app to track your child's bus route by going to this link.
- We are hiring! The following positions are posted on Talented. Please email me directly at lamoury@cantonma.org if you or someone you know is interested in applying:
- 1, Educational Assistant
- 1, Assisted Behavior Analyst (ABA)
- 1, School Aide
- Parking lot safety is imperative to ensure our students, staff, and families are safe. The speed limit is 5 mph. Please do not leave your car idling when you drop your child off. Staff will be there to support your child in the morning. Please be considerate of others when driving in the parking lot. Please be vigilant, so you are aware of traffic and pedestrians crossing the street. Finally, if you need to come into the building, please park in one of our visitors parking spots.
- Check out the upcoming events for the week ahead and our photo highlights from this past week with highlights on Luce specialists, grade 2-5 open house, and movie night.

CAPT Updates
Have you seen the latest addition to the Luce Elementary School campus? Our main entrance now features a stunning new communication sign, which has become one of our primary ways to share weekly events with our caregiver community.
Our incredible Canton Association of Parents and Teachers (CAPT) generously donated this beautiful sign. Each year, the Luce CAPT raises funds to support in-school programming for our students, and we are truly fortunate to have their support and dedication to our vibrant learning community.
A special thank you goes to Jeni Putnam, our former Luce CAPT President, whose hard work and dedication brought this project to life. This generous contribution from the CAPT, made possible under her leadership, will have a lasting impact on our school.
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. We hope you enjoy the beautiful picture of our new sign!
The CAPT would like to thank Tavern in the Square for raising $1,799 to benefit the Dean S. Luce Elementary School!!!
Room Parents Needed
We are currently looking for volunteers to act as Room Parents for each classroom. Most years, every classroom at the Luce has identified room parents arranged through and supervised by CAPT. Communication with the teacher will be necessary for determining specific responsibilities for individual classrooms. Traditionally, responsibilities have included assisting the classroom teacher in planning and coordinating special classroom events & celebrations, and communicating with parents about needed supplies. Additionally, room parents also communicate with families to disseminate CAPT, Luce School Council, and other Canton Public School information. Room parents may also work with families to obtain needed volunteers for school and CAPT events. Individual teachers determine the amount of involvement Room Parents have in each classroom.
Two Room Parent volunteers are needed for each class. We ask that you have a working e-mail account, are willing to communicate information between your child’s teacher and other parents, and are available periodically during the school day for special events (typically 4x per year). Room Parents must have a current CORI form & fingerprinting on file and maintain confidentiality at all times.
If you would like to be considered for this position, please complete the Google form below. Room parents will be chosen by lottery and parents will be notified of the assignments. If you would like to submit your name for more than one child's classroom, please fill out a separate form for each classroom.
Please submit this form no later than Friday, September 20th, 2023.
If you have any questions, please contact our room parent coordinators...
