Writing to Learn in Economics
Economics Teaching Workshop - Room 241, San Jacinto Bldg.
Change in Meeting Time and Room
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 18, 2015 as we host our next Economics Curriculum Night which will be a workshop titled "Writing to Learn in Economics" inspired by William Zinsser of Yale University, author of several best-selling books on writing. Do you want to help your students learn how to be better writers? Do you want to convince students that writing is not merely an exercise but a process that helps them learn? This workshop will also provide valuable insights including how to use good rubrics to simplify grading, requiring students to use college tutorial services to get feedback on their work and how to put a personal touch to your own constructive feedback by using video screen capturing software and even reliance on artificial intelligence. In looking at economics writing we'll examine how many "likelies" can make an "unlikely", how "accounts for it" isn't the same as "causes it" and many other beguiling words and phrases that students use unwittingly in their writing. To register for the workshop please RSVP below by providing your name and email address. We will need an accurate head count so that we know how many boxed lunches to serve. I look forward to seeing you on August 18th! This workshop is going to piggyback on the Adjunct Orientation meeting. So if you are an adjunct instructor make sure to leave that meeting in time to come to our meeting at 7:30 p.m. Don't worry, the vice chancellor knows this is happening.
