The GMA Chess Team Program Description
Checkmate! Gwynedd-Mercy Academy Elementary is thrilled to offer our first ever GMA Chess Team. In partnership with Rookly Chess the GMA Chess team is open to all students in grades 3 through 8. Students will be matched up live against other elementary and middle school students throughout the country to compete in a weekly supervised virtual chess match.
Matches will be held after school on Tuesdays in the computer lab for the Fall season. Students will be dismissed to their matches at the end of the school day. All team members must be picked up at 5:15 each week. Any student wishing to attend CARES after the competitions must check availability with our CARES Program team prior to the season beginning. Parents will not be able to attend their child's matches. We will need a minimum (no maximum) of 6 players to enter a team.
Please note this is not an instructional chess program. Our Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Tom Lydon, will serve as the team proctor throughout the season. Students interested in learning how to play chess should consider registering for Chess Wizards through our GMA QUEST Clubs programming. Again, students are meeting on Tuesdays for competitions, not chess instruction.
Students should bring a snack and a water bottle the day of each competition. Students must compete in their full Gwynedd Mercy Academy uniform. GMA gym uniforms and appropriate dress down day attire will be acceptable on those scheduled dates.
