Newtown United Methodist Church
July 2024 Newsletter
Note from the Pastor's Desk
Dear Newtown UMC Family,
As we enter the warm and leisurely month of July, many look forward to vacations and a slower pace of life. This season provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the biblical foundation of rest and its significance in our spiritual journey.
In our fast-paced world, the concept of rest can sometimes feel elusive. Yet, the Bible offers profound insights into the importance of rest, not only for our physical well-being but also for our spiritual health.
One of the earliest mentions of rest is found in the creation narrative. In Genesis 2:2-3, we read that God rested on the seventh day after six days of creating the heavens and the earth. This rest was not due to fatigue but was an intentional pause, a model for us to follow. God blessed this day and made it holy, setting a divine precedent for the rhythm of work and rest in our lives.
The Sabbath, as instituted in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11), is a gift from God, a day set apart for rest and worship. Observing the Sabbath helps us remember that our value is not solely in our productivity but in our identity as God’s beloved children. It is a reminder that God is sovereign and that we can trust Him to provide for our needs, even when we pause from our labors.
Jesus Himself modeled the importance of rest. In Mark 6:31, He told His disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus withdrawing from the crowds to pray and find solitude, emphasizing the need for spiritual and physical rejuvenation.
Moreover, Jesus offers us a deeper, spiritual rest. In Matthew 11:28-30, He invites us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” This invitation extends beyond physical rest, pointing to a profound peace and rest that we find in a relationship with Him.
As we enjoy the summer season, I encourage you to embrace the gift of rest. Here are some
practical steps to consider:
- Set Aside Time for Sabbath: Dedicate a day each week to rest from your usual labors and focus on worship, family, and activities that rejuvenate your spirit.
- Unplug and Disconnect: Take breaks from technology and social media to quiet your mind and reconnect with God and loved ones.
- Spend Time in Nature: Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or a day at the beach, nature can be a wonderful setting for rest and reflection.
- Pray and Meditate: Use this time to deepen your relationship with God. Reflect on Scripture, spend time in prayer, and listen for God’s voice.
- Prioritize Sleep and Health: Ensure you are getting enough sleep and care for your physical health. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and caring for them is an act of worship.
Let us remember that rest is not a luxury but a necessity, deeply rooted in our faith. As we take our summer vacations and enjoy a slower pace, may we find true rest in God’s presence and return refreshed and ready to serve Him with renewed vigor.
Wishing you a restful and blessed summer!
May God Bless You Richly,
Pastor Rodney
