Music News

In recognition of Black History Month, all music classes spent time in February, studying and enjoying the music of American composer, Scott Joplin (1868-1917). All music students are now quite familiar with Joplin’s most successful work, Maple Leaf Rag. His style continues to influence popular music and artists around the globe. Some of our very own Stonegate students are learning to play Joplin’s The Entertainer after learning about Scott Joplin in music class. Looking at things from a different perspective and a different era in American history, we also discovered how Scott Joplin was able to find an ingenious way to make a living through what is now known as being paid through percentage royalties.

Focus on 4th grade Music:

Our 4th grade music students are practicing 4 (in some cases 5) ways to perform, This Land is Your Land. Our 4th graders can perform the song by singing, playing the ukulele, playing the xylophone, and playing the recorder. Many students can also perform on the piano. However, that skill was obtained through their private studies. Youth Art Month

Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observation each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Established in 1961, Youth Art Month provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are fostered through experience in the visual arts that are not possible in other subjects offered in the curriculum.

There will be opening parties on Friday March 6, 2020 from 5-7pm at the Sullivan Munce Museum, 530 Home, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library, & Robert Goodman Jewelers. Other Stonegate artwork will be on display at Greek's Pizza, too. Please come out to visit any or all of the opening celebrations to see the artwork on display and enjoy some treats!

Each child of legal settlement shall be eligible for kindergarten providing that s/he has attained the age of five (5) on or before August 1st of the enrolling year as specified in IC 20-33-2-7.

An appeal process is available to any parent/guardian who wishes to enroll their child in kindergarten even though s/he does not meet this age requirement. The appeal process is available for any child who will be five (5) years of age by September 1st of the enrolling year as verified by an official birth certificate. The Parent School Safety Academy is a unique program to Zionsville Community Schools that will inform parents about school safety principles and fundamentals that guide response protocols in our schools. This program will not reveal details that would compromise safety at Zionsville Community Schools but will provide parents with a basic understanding of school safety practices and allow for participate participation.

During this interactive program, parent participants will learn about national and state safety practices, current trends in school safety, and how these practices and trends impact safety planning at Zionsville Community Schools. We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

• Volunteer Coaches
• Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
• Library Helpers
• After Prom Workers
• Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
• Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state-mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

• Classroom Guest Speakers
• Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
• Parent/Teacher Conferences

We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.

*ZCS thanks all volunteers for their generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.

ZCS, like other public schools, has a no-idling policy for vehicles on campus. The purpose of the policy is to limit vehicle emissions that might be brought into the schools and adversely impact the health of our students and staff. If you are stopped on campus for more than 5 minutes, please remember to turn off your engine. We thank you for abiding by this policy to help reduce the exposure to these emissions.
