NHHS Weekly Update

October 6, 2024

New Hanover High School Students and Parents, this is your Principal Philip Sutton. Thank you all for your donations last week for Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief. Our Hurricane Relief heroes Coach Monroe and Coach Lautzenheiser took a truck full of supplies to Draughn High School on Saturday! Thank you all for being Strength Through Unity for Western NC!

Schedule Updates

Students, we will operate on the Regular Monday, Tuesday, Thurs, Fri. Schedule on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of this week. On Wednesday, we will follow the Flex schedule with all students reporting to 2nd block. Each Wednesday students will report to a different block for Flex. Our Flex period is an opportunity for students to get academic support, interventions, and check-ins with teachers. The schedule for Flex is as follows:

October 9, 2025 - 2nd Block
October 16, 2024 - 3rd Block
October 23, 2024 - 4th Block

This Friday, October 11 will be a Teacher Workday. No school for students.

PSAT

The PSAT will be given to registered students on Oct. 8 at St. Andrews Church (across from the NHHS Tennis Courts on Market St). Students should report to the church by 8:30 am. Students that report after the test begins will not be able to take the test at another time and will not receive a refund. Bring your charged laptop and a charger. If students still need to complete their Digital Readiness Check they will need to see Ms. Williams in front of the Media Center between 8:30 am and 10:30 am on Monday 10/07.

Testing Information & PreACT for 10th Grade Oct. 22

NHCS works to keep all families informed about important testing events through our Testing Website. This site is linked on the New Hanover HS homepage and includes information about specific tests, the testing calendar, score reports, and more. The PreACT exam will be held on Tuesday 10/22/24 for all students who are listed as being in the 10th grade in PowerSchool and who have not taken the PreACT in a previous year. Please review this letter for more information regarding the PreACT

Governor's School Information

Applications for NC Governor's School are open. Governor's School is a prestigious summer enrichment program for rising juniors and seniors who would like to explore areas of interest with like-minded peers without the pressure of grades. Information on how to apply is available on the Student Resources website and the AIG website. Applications are due to Ms. Mauk, the new AIG Coordinator, by 3pm Oct. 25. An application help session will be held during Flex on Oct. 16 in room 509 - email Ms. Mauk if you would like to attend, reagan.mauk@nhcs.net

Post-Secondary - Enrolled, Enlisted, and Employed Oct. 8

There will be a "Post-Secondary - Enrolled, Enlisted, and Employed" presentation on 10/8/24 at Minnie Evans (Ashley High School) at 6 PM. For Parents and students needing assistance with what's next!

CFCC Virtual Information Session

CFCC Roadshow

On the road again. Just can’t wait to get on the road again. The life I love is making music with my friends, and I can’t wait to get on the CFCC Roadshow again on October 9th in Brogden Gym for students to see opportunities at CFCC.

NHHS Wellness Center Information

Oh na-na, what's my name? Oh na-na, what's my name? What's my name? What's my name? WHAT is the name of the Wilmington Health Access for Teens at NHHS! It is a health clinic on campus, separate from the school nurse, where enrolled students can receive medical and mental healthcare services? Students can receive:

Sports Physicals
Required Immunizations
Annual Well Visits or NC School Physicals
Appointments for minor medical concerns (with rapid testing on site for strep, covid, flu and more)
Outpatient Mental Health Therapy
