This Week's Focus: Inspire Lifelong Learning
One of the key goals of an IB education is to “inspire a lifelong love of learning, marked by enthusiasm and curiosity.” One approach that fosters this positive attitude is providing scholars with choices in how they express their understanding. Here are some examples where scholars have taken ownership of their learning and made unique choices to demonstrate their understanding:
10th Grade Language & Literature
Scholars were tasked with creating visual representations of three characters from Macbeth. The resulting projects were creative, insightful, and highlighted strong character analysis. Here are a few standout examples:
One scholar conducted historical and geographical research to portray the characters with accuracy. His efforts included writing dates in Roman numerals and featuring Inverness’ largest castle, all to create an authentic depiction of King Duncan.
Another scholar used three different insects in her painting to symbolize the characters. Drawing on Shakespeare's theme of the conflict between good and evil, she portrayed Banquo as a moth drawn to light, symbolizing his tragic death.
These examples show how scholar choice empowers creativity and deepens understanding.
6th Grade Leadership
Scholars have been working closely with Mr. Richard to address maintenance issues around the school. They began by listening to concerns, identifying problems, and selecting which issues they wanted to tackle.
In the next phase, after 'Developing Ideas,' scholars will form partnerships or groups. They will then choose which solution to focus on and collaborate to 'Create the Solution.'
This project is a wonderful combination of scholar choice and community support, showcasing how leadership and creativity come together.
Our IB Caring Awards this Week Go To...
Aniyah always puts everyone before herself. Whether it be her siblings at home, friends at school (even giving her lunch money when others didn't have), to giving her teachers a homemade basket, just last week. She has a heart of gold. Mr.Jason her science teacher called a couple weeks ago and had me in one of the best mommy moments ever. From speaking on how she is so caring in class, to being the best writer to being the one who comprehends the easiest and helps out when others do not. Being a child this day and age is by far not easy what so ever. And Aniyah herself has obstacles. And she overcomes them by living day by day and learning from not being selfish.
Grethel is always willing to lend an ear or help in any way possible. Whether it's for a teacher, a scholar or coworker, she shows that she cares for all.
This scholar is highly deserving of this award and she works her best to be a model scholar within the classroom. She helps her peers whenever they are confused or missed a few days of school. Furthermore, she works very hard to complete her work and also be a caring scholar. Her positive attitude helps others feel welcomed and accepted!
She is a true caring teacher who puts her scholars first and wants the best for her scholars inside and outside of the classroom. Whenever she sees a scholar having a hard day, she approaches them to make sure she can help them and try to cheer them up. Furthermore, she is a true caring co-teacher who always asks if I am okay whenever I am sick or having a hard day too. Overall, Odyssey is so lucky to have her in our community and she is very deserving of this award.
Rene is always willing to help out someone in need, he is the kind of person that will give his piece of bread if he sees someone is hungry and can’t afford it, Rene loves to volunteer and help out.
We see him at school being caring and kind in all his interactions. He says hello, smiles at everyone on campus, and really goes above and beyond to make others feel welcome. He takes on challenges of kindness as well! We appreciate you Rene.
I wanna nominate Hailey Ratunil for being such a caring, amazing, passionate, person. She no matter what shows others so much patients and has such a kind, caring soul. Whenever I'm stressing about school shes the first one who'll be there for me to care about what I'm talking about or what I'm stressed about. Hailey is such an amazing scholar as well. Shes shows so much respect to teachers and other scholars. I don't think ill ever find her being disrespectful to teachers or others even though her and another scholar aren't on good terms and when she isn't a big fan of a teacher, she will forever respect that teacher, or when she's at ambassadors and she's meeting a new 6th grader who just joined, Hailey treats them with so much respect, kindness, etc. I could go on and on about how Hailey is the most amazing, compassionate, caring, nice, empathetic, supportive, understanding and, considerate I've ever met.

Don't forget PE Uniforms!
During one semester of the school year, scholars will have Physical Education (PE) classes. They will need to bring uniforms for changing and a combination lock for their lockers. Scholars start dressing out Monday!!!
It is a great idea to grab a combination locker this summer and have scholars practice unlocking and locking them!
Scholar Drop Off and Pick Up
Please note that the first week or two of school may not reflect the entire school year as we are all learning and figuring out the best way for 1800 scholars to safely arrive and leave campus daily.
If you are coming to the 8th Grade and High School Campus, come down Verrado Way and turn into the middle lane, which will take you up to the campus. From the middle lane, you will turn left and want to go to the far right lane to continue straight by the football field and then turn left to drop off behind the campus. Follow the same route to pick up scholars at the end of the day.
If you are dropping off a 6th or 7th grade scholar, come up Verrado Way and turn right into the closest lane. You will follow this path around the school and drop off at the back of the school. Scholars will enter through the gym rather than the front office.
Buses will pick up by the 8th grade drop-off and pick-up area. Scholars will leave campus and follow the path behind the fence to get to their bus if they are a 6th or 7th grade scholar. We will assist them during the first weeks to help them get into their new routine.
You can drop off scholars as early as 7:10 am. They will remain outside until they are released to enter the buildings at 7:35 am. The school day starts at 7:40 am.
If you are running late, please bring your scholar to the front office (after 7:41 am) to check them in so they can get a pass to go to their classes.
Pick-up starts at 3:49 pm. Please do not arrive earlier, as we want to ensure the safety of our PE scholars at the back of the school. Additionally, idling cars produce fumes that can enter the building, causing headaches for our staff and scholars near the doors.

Leadership
IB Design Cycle is a structured method used in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to guide project development. It includes four stages: inquiring and analyzing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. This process promotes critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.
In a Leadership Class, scholars can use the IB Design Cycle to tackle leadership challenges by:
- Inquiring and Analyzing: Researching leadership issues.
- Developing Ideas: Planning strategies.
- Creating the Solution: Implementing projects.
- Evaluating: Reflecting on results.
This approach helps scholars systematically enhance their leadership skills through real-world applications.
All Classes are MYP
Middle Years Programme (MYP) for 6th-8th Grade provides a challenging and comprehensive framework designed to foster critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and communication skills. It includes eight subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition(Mandarin/Spanish), Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. The MYP encourages scholars to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, promoting holistic learning, personal development, and preparation for higher education.
Note this is the reason for the certain electives we offer to align with MYP.
i-Ready is an online assessment and instruction program used for benchmark assessments in Language and Literature and Math. It helps educators tailor personalized learning paths for scholars, measuring their progress and identifying areas needing support. This year, we'll administer i-Ready diagnostics twice a week in Leadership Classes to closely monitor scholars' development and adjust our teaching strategies to ensure each scholar receives the necessary support for success.
