Parent Teacher Conferences
We look forward to having parents visit with us during Parent-Teacher conferences during the week of February 10-14. Our teachers will share up to date assessment information and ways parents can support students at home as we get closer to the end of the year. I'm also available during conferences and parents can just stop by the office and talk to Carol if you would like to visit with me. See you soon!
February BINGO and Literacy Night
Our PTO will be sponsoring a Family Bingo Night and Literacy Night for families in our commons area on February 20th from 6:00-7:30 PM. Families will be able to dine on hotdogs and chips along with playing bingo games during the evening. We will have game prizes for bingo winners along with reading information and tips for parents during the evening. All students who come to bingo night will also be able to take home a free and brand new book!
Read Across America Week
Our students and staff will be celebrating Literacy/Reading during the week of March 3-7. We will send a detailed note soon but plan on theme days, art with local artist Nancy Fairbanks, along with classroom specific activities to celebrate literacy that week. We will also have Spring parties on March 7th at approximately 2:15.

Mrs. Nelson, Kindergarten
Mrs. Nelson has always wanted to be a teacher and that is a great thing. She went to college at Fort Hays State University, and she took all of her classes online. Her favorite subject is reading because reading can be really nice and peaceful. Mrs. Nelson loves teaching her students new things, and she loves it when their eyes light up when they learn something new. She also likes when she watches them use their imagination and how creative they can get! When she has free time she likes to spend time with friends and family, and she likes watching Husker games too.

Miss Huerta, 1st Grade
Why did she become a teacher? She became a teacher because she took a teaching class in college and she fell in love with it! She also loves seeing the progress her students make and having an impact on their lives. Her favorite subject to teach is skills because she loves teaching kids how to read and seeing their growth. Her favorite subject when she was in school was science because she loved experiments. For college, she went to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and she loved it! She lived in the dorms all 4 years. Her favorite hobbies are traveling, listening to music, dancing, creating art, and watching movies. When she travels, she enjoys hiking and visiting new places. She also likes visiting her family and friends. Miss Huerta’s mom and dad live in Kearney and she has a half-sister who also lives in Kearney. Her sister is 15 years older than her. Miss Huerta currently lives in Grand Island with a roommate, but she visits her family often. She has 2 goldfish and they like listening to music and swimming to the beat of it. Their names are Ginger and Snap. We are so happy to have you at Shoemaker Miss Huerta!
