News Literacy Project and News Goggles
News Literacy Project (NLP) puts out a regular newsletter called the SIFT. It's always chock full of ideas for teaching media literacy including examples of misinformation teachers can use in the classroom. They've started something called News Goggles. Essentially, they take a real news article and annotate it like a think- aloud. This new annotation feature is designed to help your students learn to think like journalists while reading news coverage. What would their digital worlds look like if they could put on a pair of “news goggles” to see coverage through a journalist’s eyes?

Soundzabound Music and Sound Effects: The Perfect Ingredient For Your Halloween Projects
By Martha Stewart, Soundzabound Music
When Soundzabound first started, one of the most requested sounds from teachers and students were scary sound effects. Even now after twenty-two years, it’s still one of our most requested sounds. Any video can be far more effective with just the right sound effect, and just five seconds of one of our spooky sounds can greatly enhance the mood of the video.
There are many reasons why your students should create videos. They are far more effective than text. Consider some of these reasons according to IdeaRocket:
- They demand your attention
- We are attracted to movement
- They create strong emotional responses that make students and teachers
- want to share
Forrester Research estimates one minute of online video equates to approximately 1.8 million written words. In addition, 90 percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text. This indicates visual education aids like video can improve learning styles and increase the rate at which we retain information. Multiple studies have shown that video, specifically, can be a highly effective educational tool (e.g., Kay, 2012; Allen and Smith, 2012; Lloyd and Robertson, 2012; Rackaway, 2012; Hsin and Cigas, 2013).
I challenge you today to reach out to your students and give them the opportunity to use music with their video projects. You may just help create the next Steven Spielberg while increasing their brain power!
