Your choice between a Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA) degree and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree will come down to your educational and career goals. With the BA, you'll take more liberal arts courses (general studies such as literature, history, etc.). With the BFA, you'll focus more on intensive art and design studies.

An Arts degree is one of the most relevant and useful educational investments you can make today. An Arts degree doesn’t prepare you for one specific job; it gives you the foundation for hundreds of possible careers.

Studies in the Arts go far beyond the short-term gains of narrow specialization and limited career training. They provide broad-based benefits and deep grounding in the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable, meaningful employment over a lifetime.

As an Arts graduate, you will have achieved

• strong critical reasoning, argumentation, and strategic problem-solving skills
• communication skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening across diverse audiences and contexts in various situations, forms, and media;
• a skilled and informed ability to enter into debate and dialogue;
• flexible thinking for the integration and transfer of knowledge and cross-fertilization of ideas;
• exposure to diverse cultures, social forces, and ethical perspectives;
• respect for past and present challenges;

What Can You Do With An Arts Degree? Anything You Want!

Those with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree can pursue entry-level work in careers such as:

• Art director.
• Web designer.
• Creative director.
• Graphic artist/designer.
• Fashion designer (assistant, associate, senior)
• Interior designer (junior, senior)
• Interior design project manager.

On Thursday, November 4th, approximately 55 Triway Junior High students participated in a visit from Jerzy Drozd, Ohio Teaching Artist. An Ohio Teaching Artist demonstrates artistic excellence; the ability to integrate academic content; effective classroom management and student engagement; and strong communication with education, arts, and cultural partners. Teaching artists on this roster are vetted by an application and observation process and are required to participate in on-going professional development to provide the highest quality arts education experiences and grow their teaching artist knowledge and skills.

Jerzy is a professional cartoonist that integrates visual art with ELA and other content areas. The workshop, "Writing with Images," explores uses for the comics medium, or sequential words and images, to create a descriptive narrative, enhancing learning in writing/language arts. Students' really enjoyed learning through arts integration based on their laser focused engagement with writing and drawing.

Mr. Taylor, the Art Teacher at Triway Jr.High stated, “I was really excited to have Jerzy come to the classroom. Not only did the art class benefit from seeing Art on Technology and as a career, but the ELA students were able to learn how ART can help with innovative writing ideas. Additionally, students got to work with a live artist, in-person, which is a rare learning opportunity.

The project was possible from a generous grant from the Ohio Arts Council. Dr. Michelle Muro, from the Tri- County ESC, coordinated the event.

Our annual Northwestern Cookies and Canvas fundraiser had 84 community artists sign up this year! Our artist's were anywhere from 1st graders to their grandparents! Anyone in the Northwestern community was able to sign up. We had an amazing turn out and everyone had a successful painting! Cookies were provided by Mrs. Rachel Wooding's FCS cooking classes and Art Club would like to give them a huge thank you! We would also like to thank our school and our community for supporting us!

Here at Northwestern School District we love to find ways to promote art outside of the classroom. Between our annual Cookies and Canvas event, art clubs, and the middle school Community Art class and Drama Club, we have multiple outlets for students and the community to engage in the art making process. The middle school’s most recent project has been the 8th grade art club leader’s effort in painting parking spots in collaboration with the Post Prom Committee to raise funds for post prom and for art club. Art club leaders took the sketches of participating staff members and turned them into beautifully painted parking spots. Each one is unique and took lots of time and patience!

The Tri-County Young Authors’ Conference (YAC), held by Tri-County ESC and The Buckeye Book Fair was a successful day of learning and enjoyment for area schools and their students.

On Friday, November 5th, students in grades 3-8 gathered from across the tri-county area to learn and participate in conference sessions from Ohio-based authors. The sessions included authors and illustrators such as Jerzy Drozd, Will Hillenbrand, Julie Frey, and Dandi Mackall. The presenters shared information on how to structure a story, incorporating point-of-view, understanding how lines and shapes evoke emotion in illustration, the qualities of non-fiction writing, and the process of editing and publishing with students.

Students were able to browse and purchase books from authors at the book fair, and even had the opportunity to have books signed directly by the authors!

The collective effort of Tri-County ESC and The Buckeye Book Fair in collaboration with area school districts made it possible for students to come together and learn from these talented individuals. The authors and illustrators were able to demonstrate to students how reading, writing, and illustrating are not only tools for learning but are also a passion that allows for spreading joy and knowledge.

To provide equity for all schools and students, all area schools were provided access to similar sessions through online recordings made available to schools.

In 1960, the Wayne County Bandarama began with the massing of 10 bands on the field for the Star Spangled Banner, a tradition that has continued for over 60 years. This annual show, held at Triway stadium, features several Wayne County bands each year.

The purpose of Bandarama is to demonstrate the musical and marching strides that take place each year, as well as, showing the public that music is a vital part of school curriculum. In preparation for the marching band season, students start practicing at the end of July. Marching bands continue to perform until the end of October or early November. Estimations indicate that over 30,000 band students have participated in Bandarama since it began.

The answer to the question “What is a communications degree?” has changed quite a bit since the rise of the internet. A communication degree focuses on how people interact and communicate with one another. Prior to the digital age, communication degree programs were limited to the study of verbal interactions and communication in traditional print mediums such as newspapers. But the introduction of the web permanently altered communication as we know it. From instant messaging to customized web content, the internet is revolutionizing how people share information and interact with one another on a daily basis.

Today, bachelor’s degree in communication programs still study more traditional verbal and written communication. But they also focus heavily on digital communication, helping students gain an understanding of the key concepts — ranging from data analytics to social media — that drive our interconnected society. With a degree in communication, successful students master the digital tools and techniques to not only excel in modern communication, but become a part of the industry’s future.
