The Raven Report

Our Improv Team travelled to Ottawa at the end of March to participate in the Canadian Improv Games National Festival!

Our team played some AMAZING scenes on the National Arts Centre stage on Thursday. Although we did not make finals, our team played their hearts out, had some amazing characters, genuine sincerity and genius moments. The students have made some fantastic and lasting memories from this experience! We have also been approached by numerous players and coaches from other competing teams praising our team on their efforts and identifying key strengths that our kids bring to the stage.

The final result, after competing against the 15 teams from across Canada, has Eastside in 12th place, missing 11th place by only 1 point. As a first-time team to ever play in National Tournament, this is an AMAZING accomplishment for our players and our school. We have definitely made ourselves known and the students have made so many great connections with teams from across the country! This truly shows that this tournament is indeed a loving competition and that fosters growth for all involved in taking up "the brave space" at the front of the stage.

Our Grade 10 students (and some grade 11 and 12 students) will be writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in April. The OSSLT is a provincial test that measures a student's reading and writing skills expected to be acquired by the end of Grade 9. Passing the OSSLT is a graduation requirement for all Ontario students.

Test Dates: We will be administering the OSSLT on throughout the month of April. We will be informing students of their specific test date shortly.

Supporting Your Child: Our teachers have been working diligently throughout the year to prepare students for the OSSLT. They have incorporated practice test questions and strategies into their regular lessons.

We understand that standardized tests can cause some anxiety. Please reassure your child that the OSSLT is designed to be achievable, and their teachers are here to support them throughout the process.

Assessment and evaluation are ongoing aspects of the teaching and learning process. We communicate formally through reports to parents that are issued to all students three times in each semester. Here are some upcoming reporting dates:

April 25 , 2024 - Mid-Semester Reports - Sent home and published in Aspen

May 21, 2024 - Credit Alert Reports - Sent home and published in Aspen (only for students who are at risk of not earning a credit)

July 3, 2024 - Final Reports - Published in Aspen

We are very excited to announce the return of a Yearbook Club at Eastside Secondary. Students are working with Ms. Murray to create an 80 page memoir of the 2023-24 school year.

We will also be selling yearbooks in the library at lunch for $28.00

Eastside Secondary School has an active School Council that consists of parents, staff, students, and community members. Meetings are held regularly. The team works together as an advisory group to support excellent programming and to foster ongoing school improvement.
