A Note From Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all of the families who have truly leaned into partnership and understanding, as we all look forward to the temperature meeting the DCPS threshold for students to have recess outside. As shared with the LSAT and PTA, this is the guidance from DCPS.
“A cold weather advisory is announced when cold weather conditions have a high risk of bodily harm. Children should be indoors under temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit including the wind chill index, which is the temperature the body feels when exposed to wind speed. Teachers should exercise caution at temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Dangers to children under these weather conditions include frostbite and hypothermia.” This is in addition to the requirement for a safe playground, that would need to be clear of slipping hazards, such as water and ice.
Additionally, we would like to remind families that lunch and PE often occur simultaneously with recess, meaning the gym is not simply available for alternative use. Students are already using that space and at times it is split with the dividing wall, to create numerous useable spaces. Teachers have also been working together to provide various options for student engagement, while following the DCPS requirements.
Thank you again, to those who have shared ways they can personally support these efforts. Collaboration is key. To be clear, the Hyde-Addison ES team looks forward to students being able to return to outdoor recess.
Please be reminded that there is no school for DCPS students on January 20th (Holiday) or January 27th (PD/Records Keeping).
As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal
Hyde-Addison Elementary School
NEWS & UPDATES
A Note of Thanks from Mr. Jones
Greetings,
I am truly honored to receive the recognition of Standing Ovation for the staff Excellence awards. First, I’d like to thank the leadership, and the specific people involved in the selection process for this incredible honor. It means so much to me to know that my work has made an impact and that it is valued by the amazing Hyde Addison staff, students and families.
I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my colleagues and operations teammates. Any achievements are rarely the result of one individual. It's a collaborative effort. I've been fortunate to work with some of the most talented, supportive and dedicated people I could ever hope for. Your encouragement, shared wisdom, and teamwork have truly elevated what we've accomplished together.
I'd also like to thank the families, the students, and any individual who has been instrumental in my journey. Your unwavering support and belief in me have helped me reach this milestone.
This award is not just a reflection of my individual effort but of the value, vision, and spirit of excellence that define Hyde Addison ES. It's a privilege to be a part of an environment that prioritizes growth, innovation, and collaboration.
As I accept this award, I feel both humbled and motivated. This recognition inspires me to keep striving for even greater contributions not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them, to support my colleagues, to embrace challenges, and to continue growing both personally and professionally.
Once again thank you for the incredible honor. I am deeply grateful!
Best,
Mario Jones
Custodial Foreman

Prioritizing Attendance
At Hyde-Addison, we know that every day matters when it comes to student success! In-seat attendance is a key factor in academic achievement, and we want to take a moment to celebrate and recognize the students and families who have prioritized consistent attendance.
Current Attendance Snapshot as of 1/15/25:
- Pre-K3 & Pre-K4: 24.45% of students are chronically absent.
- Kindergarten–Grade 5: 9.57% of students are chronically absent.
While we're proud of the efforts many families have made, there's still work to do. Chronic absenteeism in our youngest learners is a priority area for growth. We know early education lays the foundation for lifelong learning, and every day counts!
Calling on Our Pre-K Families!
We need your help to reduce absenteeism in our Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 programs. Your support ensures that your child is building strong routines and engaging in valuable learning experiences daily.
💡 How You Can Help:

3️⃣ Communicate with us about challenges you may be facing—our team is here to help! Please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov if you are in need of support.
Together, let’s make attendance a top priority. Thank you for your partnership in ensuring we reach our attendance goals.

The OSSE DC School Report Card
“The 2024 DC School Report Card is built on OSSE’s amended ESSA State Plan, which increases the school accountability system’s emphasis on student growth and marginalized student groups. OSSE has calculated a summative score for each school, as required by USED and the District’s ESSA State Plan. To determine a school’s summative score, OSSE calculates metric scores for each student group, combines student group scores into single metric scores, and then calculates the school-level summative score (up to 100 points). The student groups included are students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, English learners, and racial/ethnic groups.”
Data points include Academic Achievement, Academic Growth, Student Attendance, Early Childhood Environment, English Language “Proficiency”, and Enrollment.
Based on the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's DC School Report Card Accountability Scores (2024)…
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS Elementary Schools.
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS Elementary, Middle and High Schools.
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS and Public Charter Schools in Washington, DC.
You can read more about how OSSE calculates summative scores at OSSE Data Discovery.
