It is fun!
Part of meeting our mission to prepare students to be lifelong learners is instilling a sense of joy in learning. We aim to meet students where they are at, create safe spaces for students to learn and take risks as part of their growth and development. We support students through meeting their individual needs and empowering them by providing them the tools and strategies they need in order to navigate challenges. The key to this is the meaningful relationships our educators build with students!
Full STEAM Ahead!
Science, Technology, the Arts, and Mathematics
At Oshki Ogimaag Community School our educators work together collaboratively to map curriculum, based on MN Standards and integrating the components of our school’s mission across fields. STEAM is an educational approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. We use our natural environment as a classroom space, rich with hands-on, experiential learning. We provide introductions to new concepts through a variety of modalities to reach the diverse learning styles of our students and to scaffold learning experiences. Much of the learning at Oshki Ogimaag is project-based incorporating the components of STEAM and building social emotional learning skills as students work collaboratively.
In Ms. Jeana’s class, students are working on a variety of STEAM projects, including observing and hypothesizing the transformation from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis to butterfly; their study of the solar system; and a controlled research experiment on how plants react to different environmental factors. At Oshki Ogimaag Community School much of learning is inquiry-based, a learning process that engages our students by making real-world connections through exploration and high-level questioning, This approach encourages students to engage in problem-solving and experiential learning while developing their critical thinking skills. All of the work students do towards meeting our Environmental Education goals is inquiry-based and it is amazing to observe the insightful discoveries and lines of questioning that even our youngest learners engage in!
