The Walker Talker

On Thursday, the EdPro and Early Childhood students were able to take part in the 20th annual Fire Safety Olympics at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The Fire Safety Olympics is hosted by the Indianapolis Fire Department and provides an opportunity for over 800 first and second grade students around the city to learn about planning, preparation, practice, and prevention in relation to fire safety. The EdPro and ECE students are able to assist the first and second grade students with the obstacles and training sessions throughout the day. As I was told by one of our second year students, "THIS IS MY FAVORITE DAY OF THE ENTIRE YEAR."

Members of the WCC Leadership Council joined the Seniors and Sophomores of the Student Council at the annual Leadership Retreat at Camp Belzer. Members Mia Criswell, Jailyn Majors, Leslie Orta-Hernandez, Liliana Osborne, Ronald Parsons, Leila Ruggs, Raabyn Smith and Ms Colville participated in team building games, applying leadership skills and discussions on what it takes to be a leader at school. The day included a Jenga game where certain blocks were coded that required the team to complete tasks before continuing. Students had to work together to climb to the top of an 8 foot pole, participated in ships and captains, and dominated the pyramid of success! The Council looks forward to using their experiences in support of the many programs at WCC.

On Wednesday, Walker Career Center hosted it's annual Advisory Board Dinner. All 25 Career Programs at WCC have an Advisory Board that plays a major part in the planning and programming of our Career Programs. The boards are made up of members of local businesses, universities, community leaders, faculty and staff, and various organizations. The Advisory Board dinner is catered by our award winning culinary arts program.

On Thursday, October 31 IVY TECH will be visiting the Walker Career Center to meet with seniors that are interested in pursuing a post-secondary education next year. Students will have the opportunity to complete an application on the spot and talk with individuals from the Office of Admission, Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP), and Ivy Tech Men of Merit Program. Ivy Tech has a strong partnership with the Walker Career Center and we appreciate everything they do for our school community.

Last Wednesday, students in the WCC accounting classes were invited to the INCPAs Scholars Game On! Field Trip. During their visit downtown, the students were able to network with and hear from a panel of CPAs from the Indianapolis area, visit a CPA firm and work ona Forensic Accounting case. This trip is always a great chance to see what CPAs really do!

The Lady Warriors Varsity Soccer Team had Teacher Appreciation Night last week during Pink Week. Many Warren Township teachers were honored in addition to two of our very own Walker Career Center staff members. Congratulations to Ms. Handy and Mrs. Neyland! These individuals were honored by student athletes for making an impact in their high school careers both in and out of the classroom.

Walker Career Center and Warren Central High School are excited to host the annual Career and College Fest on Wednesday, November 13 on the Warren Central campus. All students are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to explore a wide array of post-secondary opportunities.

This fall, MSD of Warren Township will be creating a comprehensive strategic plan based on community input that will ensure all students and staff have the conditions necessary to develop and apply Journey of a Graduate (JoG) skills and dispositions. The Journey of a Graduate skills are a set of 6 skills and dispositions that have been identified by our community needed for success in and out of school. The JoG skills are Critical Thinking, Citizenship, Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, and Resilience. These JoG skills will serve as the foundation of the district strategic plan.

One way the district will capture community input is through an online survey. Linked below is a short survey that will ask questions around our strengths as a district and help us identify areas for improvement.
