Types of Scholarships
An Institutional Scholarship is a scholarship provided directly by a specific college or university. Nearly all community colleges, colleges, and universities offer these scholarships, and they can be a valuable resource to help fund your education. Click here to explore some of the popular college's scholarships and their application details.
Key Points to Remember:
Automatic Consideration: For some institutions, your application for admission doubles as your scholarship application. If you apply by the deadline, you will automatically be considered for these scholarships without needing to submit additional materials. Check the college's website to find the value of their automatic scholarships.
Separate Applications: Other institutions may require you to complete a separate scholarship application. This could include additional essays, recommendation letters, or other supporting documents.
Auditions: Scholarships that require an audition are financial awards given to students based on their talent and skill in specific fields, such as music and dance. To apply, students must typically perform a live audition or submit a recorded performance that showcases their abilities. The audition allows the selection committee to assess the student's technical proficiency, artistic expression, and potential for growth.
To ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information, please check the college's website. Scholarship information is typically found under the financial aid or scholarship section. You can also contact the college's financial aid office for more details. They can provide comprehensive guidance on available scholarships, specific application procedures, and deadlines.
Outside Scholarships
Local scholarship opportunities are available through a variety of sources such as insurance companies, civic groups, community organizations, local businesses, and more. Be proactive and do your research to uncover these valuable resources. I will update this page with local scholarship opportunities as they become available. Stay tuned for the latest information!
Foundation or Endowed Scholarships
Some colleges offer Endowed, Foundation, and other scholarships. For example, read about the Endowed Scholarships available at UNA.
These scholarships are usually made possible through private donors.
The scholarship award amounts vary and may not represent total tuition costs.
The eligibility requirements for these scholarships vary by college.
To find out if your college or university has foundation or endowed scholarships available, visit the college’s website and type “other scholarships” or “endowed scholarships” into the search box. Or contact the college’s financial aid department.
In-State vs. Out-of-State College
As you explore your college options, it's important to understand the key differences between in-state and out-of-state colleges. This knowledge will help you make an informed decision about where to apply and ultimately attend.
In-State Colleges:
- Tuition Costs: Most in-state colleges offer significantly lower tuition rates for residents of their state. This can make them a more affordable option for many students.
- Residency Requirements: To qualify for in-state tuition, you must meet the state’s residency requirements, which often include living in the state for a certain period and sometimes additional criteria.
- Familiarity: Attending an in-state college often means staying closer to home, which can be comforting and convenient, allowing for easier visits with family and friends.
Out-of-State Colleges:
- Tuition Costs: Out-of-state colleges typically charge higher tuition rates for non-resident students. However, some schools offer scholarships or reduced rates for out-of-state students.
- New Experiences: Attending an out-of-state college provides an opportunity to experience a new environment, culture, and potentially more diverse perspectives.
- Expanded Options: Considering out-of-state colleges broadens your choices, potentially giving you access to programs and opportunities not available in your home state.
Scholarship Opportunities: Both in-state and out-of-state colleges offer scholarship opportunities. Be sure to check each college’s website for more information on available scholarships and how to apply.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Students must complete the FAFSA to graduate, or provide alternative graduation criteria recognized by the ALSDE (i.e., waiver). If you do not plan to complete the FAFSA, please contact the career coach at pgraham@cullmancats.net to request a waiver form.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is used to apply for federal student aid such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans. The 2025-2026 FAFSA will be available in December so stay tuned for more information about the FAFSA!
Many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid. Some private scholarship providers may use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for their aid.
