Message from Superintendent Mike Johnson
Dear CSD Families,
Each year at schools across the nation, the first full week of May is recognized as Teacher Appreciation Week. At Creswell School District, we are fortunate to employ an incredible team of educators who are dedicated to our students' progress. They are creative, resilient, and inspiring in the ways they engage not only their pupils but one another. They share goals and encouragement while keeping students' well-being central in their planning and instruction. While 2022's Teacher Appreciation Week may be ending, I am grateful for CSD's teachers each week of the year.
We all have had special teachers who helped instill confidence, exposed us to new ideas, or urged us to dream big, including educators, parents, family members, peers, and mentors. I invite you to reach out to one of YOUR special teachers and let them know how much you appreciate them; I assure you it will make their day.
Mike Johnson
Superintendent

CHS Spotlight: Outdoor Club
“Young people who have a connection to wilderness are more likely to be stewards of the land and we want to do whatever we can to foster that,” says CHS Outdoor Club advisor Liz Babbs. Babbs, who founded the club during the 2017-2018 school year, is delighted to once again be able to organize club outings for students.
“Our goal with the Outdoor Club is to reduce barriers for getting young people into the outdoors. Whether it is through learning leave no trace principles, access to expensive gear, free or reduced cost lessons and excursions, and exposure to skills required for the outdoors, we hope to get them as much access as possible.”
Through fundraising projects, direct support from the community, donations of climbing shoes from Elevation Bouldering Gym, and SPARK! Creative Learning grants from SELCO Community Credit Union, the Outdoor Club has been building their equipment inventory and helping cover costs to allow students the opportunity to try new activities.
Senior Lilly Heltman-Hogg says, "An experience I never would have had without Outdoor Club is learning to climb - both top rope and bouldering. I don't think I ever would have had the chance to just step out of my comfort zone and leap on high rocks. I think Outdoor Club really gave me access to rock climbing specifically by, one, giving me the equipment that I needed without too much cost, and encouraging me to do those things ... and just giving me the confidence to climb!"
This year, Babbs and assistant advisor Kori Wanner have, among other activities, taken students backpacking at Matthieu Lakes, hiking and camping at Sisters and Tumalo Falls, cross country skiing and climbing at Sisters Boulders.
The Outdoor Club is one of many extracurricular activities in which CHS students can choose to participate.
At-home COVID-19 Tests
ODE and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) are partnering to expand at-home COVID-19 testing for all children in Oregon’s public K-12 schools. Starting in May, OHA will be sending iHealth COVID-19 tests to distribute to our student population. This distribution represents one strategy to increase access to testing resources in our school communities, especially as students head into the summer break during which they may no longer have access to testing at school.
Students and their families are encouraged to use these tests if they develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or who have had a known exposure to COVID-19.
To request a test kit, please fill out the form here.
