Welcome to 4th Grade!
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! My name is Mrs Jones and I am so excited for the opportunity to be your child's teacher this year. I will be starting my 14th year at Union Academy. I have been teaching over 22 years and absolutely love working with children and helping them love to learn. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education at Appalachian State University. I have many years of experience teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in both Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and at Union Academy. My favorite place to spend time is at the beach with my family, reading books and listening to the ocean. My 2 children, Molly and Jack are both UA graduates and Molly will be a senior at NC State this year and Jack will be a freshman at Western Carolina. We are looking forward to fall football season- Go Pack.... Go Cats!!
Classroom Updates
Another amazing 4th grade week. We survived lots of rain and had 2 fun field trips. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping us have such an awesome experience at the Children's Theatre. The students loved the show (I thought it was the best one I have seen) and the park was perfect. It was a little chilly but they loved playing with new equipment and our 3rd grade friends. I can't wait to have discussions to compare and contrast the book and the play.
Next week is always a fun one with the excitement for the holiday and fun Dress Down days. I have lots of fun things planned but we will still be working to wrap up our quarter. Assignments that are not finished in class due to too much social time or a slower work pace will be sent home for completion.
The Discovery Place field trip is now listed on MyPaymentsPlus. Please make sure to register your child if they plan to join us on January 17th.
Friday folders were sent home today. Please review the papers and then send them back to school on Monday and sign the sheet in the middle. It is half way through the 2nd quarter. Make sure you are checking PowerSchool for your child's progress. Grades are entered and up to date :)

Language Arts
We finished reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever with our SOAR collaboration groups. We will be working to complete the assignments that help evaluate our reading next week. We will also be doing some holiday around the world passages and other fun activities to tie our learning into the season. When we return from break we will begin our biography unit. This is always a student favorite as we get to read, research and create a project that is amazing.
Math
This week in fractions we learned all about equivalent fractions and how represent them using pictures, number lines and equations. We extended this learning into simplifying fractions by finding the GCF (greatest common factor). This is a key skill because the expectation will be that all fractions will need to be simplified after computation. The class seemed to do well this this skill. We will be comparing and ordering fractions next week and hope to wrap up these portion of our fraction unit before break.
Science/ Social Studies
We have begun our unit on animal adaptations and I love when my students tell me how cool they think it is to be learning something new. They always love animals and this is a great unit to add knowledge to our background of information.
Our Indigenous People project has been completed! Yay!! This is always a favorite! We will begin our presentations and complete these next week. I love seeing the students be experts on their tribe. They were so excited to share their learning and I can tell they loved this project.
