Rye Neck Middle School
January 26, 2024 - Issue 10
Dear Rye Neck Families,
We hope this message finds you well as we reflect on the incredible journey we've embarked upon together during the first half of the school year. As we reach the midpoint of the academic year, we hope everyone will take a moment to celebrate the achievements and progress made by our students and staff. Please take a few minutes to read about what students have been up to in January, and what is coming up in the third quarter. As we move forward into the second half of the school year, we encourage you to continue supporting your child's educational journey.
We look forward to more shared successes, achievements, and memorable moments in the coming months.
Warm regards,
Dulce
Dr. Dulce Barker

Student of the Month (SOTM)
We are excited to announce a new program at the middle school to recognize students. Student of the Month aims to celebrate and elevates awareness of student contributions to the middle school and Rye Neck community at large. Students who are nominated have demonstrated that they value their education by exhibiting academic responsibility and curiosity. They have also demonstrated excellent behavior in and out of the classroom.
Any RNMS staff or administrator may nominate any student for any of the following reasons: significant progress in the classroom; marked improvement in grades; leadership, attendance; notable consideration toward others; outstanding attitude; community involvement; personal development; exemplary character or individual achievement.
Two students per grade will be selected by a committee. SOTM recipients will be recognized with a certificate and on our website. Information about this program has been shared with students and they received an email with specific examples for the criteria.
We look forward to this month's nominees and announcing the first batch of SOTM!

Bike Safety
We would like to remind you of some bike safety rules.
By law, all children ages 13 and under must wear a helmet while riding a bike. In Mamaroneck, bicycle riders must consider the safety of pedestrians on sidewalks (and must dismount and walk their bikes on Mamaroneck Avenue).
Unlike joggers, bicyclists should ride in the same direction as auto traffic while on the road.
Students must be mindful of how they are riding their bicycles while on our MS/HS campus. There are lots of staff, students and parents walking and many cars that are driving during arrival and dismissal.
Please review this New York State resource on Bike Safety. Please remember that all of us who use the roads, whether on foot, on a bike, or in a car, have to pay attention to each other to prevent physical injury.

After school clubs started the week of October 2nd. They are open to students in grades 6-8. Students can try different clubs or if they are in 6th grade they can also participate in intramural sports. The club presentation as well as the schedule for intramural sports is below.

News From The Classroom:
6th Grade ELA - Ms. Castaldo, Mr. Macli & Ms. Offner: We will continue our focus on basic language arts skills. January has been a busy month as we continue to hone note taking skills. We have finished The Cay, and will soon move on to our third book of the year, The Lightning Thief. The genre for January and February is Historical Fiction. Students will all read the book, Timothy of the Cay. We will be starting our unit on essay writing. Students will learn the steps for writing a strong essay, including introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions. Please help your children by reminding them to keep up with their reading. We wish you a happy, healthy 2024.
6th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: During the month of January, 6th grade art students learned about the Pop Art movement and Roy Lichtenstein. They created their own sound word designs using a printing technique and focused on a specific color scheme: either warm, cool, primary, or secondary within their work. To end the quarter, students learned about pottery from ancient Greece to create Greek vases on scratchboard focusing on using symbols and decorative patterns.
7th Grade ELA - Mr. Tinnirello: Students in seventh grade English classes are studying the science fiction genre and utopias to help prepare for Lois Lowry’s The Giver, a novel about a dystopian society that reveals the importance of differences. Students will soon receive their personal copies of the novel to read at home each night and answer questions. In addition, students are reading their independent books, which should be completed by February 9th.
7th Grade ELA B - Mr. Macli: Before starting The Giver, our class will discuss the question of whether it is preferable to have more freedoms or to be safer. Is there a way to balance freedom and safety? Is there such a thing as being too safe or too free? These questions are themes from The Giver and we will revisit them throughout the book.
7th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: During the month of January, 7th grade art students learned about Chuck Close and how he used the grid method to create highly realistic paintings and drawings of people. Students used his method to create enlarged grid drawings of candy wrappers. To end the quarter, students learned about the Futurism art movement and looked at paintings created by Giacomo Ballo. Students created drawings in his style focusing on a subject of their choice and showing its movement through the use of lines of force, patterns, repetition, value, and color.
8th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: During the month of January, 8th grade art students learned about the figure sculptures created by Alberto Giacometti. Students had to think about a pose, movement, action, or specific emotion to visually portray within their own wire figures. To end the quarter, students learned about how balance can be used within works of art, specifically in relation to symmetry, asymmetry, and radial symmetry. Students created designs using their names and radial symmetry. They used a variety of materials of their choice to create their colorful and intricate designs.
Chorus - Ms. Clarke: Congratulations to 6th grade chorus member Alexander A. on his acceptance to the All County Chorus. Auditions were held in March 2023 in Scarsdale UFSD and we just learned of his wonderful achievement. Rehearsals will take place in February and March at New Rochelle High School culminating in a performance made up of singers from schools all over Westchester County.
