McGovern News
November 1, 2024
Happy November! As we settle into this season of gratitude and reflection, we want to take a moment to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students. Each day we witness their growth, creativity, and resilience, and we are proud to support their journey. It has been a joy to visit classrooms and join in the celebrations of our students' hard work. Our first graders enthusiastically showcased their projects on community helpers, creating impressive life-sized posters and thoughtfully written pieces about the roles these important figures play in our community. It was wonderful to see so many families come together to celebrate their accomplishments!
Our kindergarten students celebrated their end of reading and writing units this week and visited each other's classrooms to engage in project-based learning. It was great to see the kindergarten children state their opinions about which museum they would like to visit and why.
Finally, our preschool students have been learning about friends, family, and our community. Through engaging activities and discussions, they are discovering the importance of relationships and how each person contributes to our shared experiences. This exploration helps cultivate empathy and understanding, setting a strong foundation for their social and emotional development.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Amy McDonald, Principal
No School
A reminder that there will be no school on Tuesday, November 5th, as our faculty and staff have professional development.
November Celebrations!
November celebrates National American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month, which honors the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of Native peoples. It highlights their vital contributions to society and raises awareness about the unique challenges they have faced historically, and continue to face today. The month also emphasizes the importance of preserving Indigenous languages, practices, and arts, promoting respect and understanding of the diverse Native American and Alaskan Native communities across the country.
All Saints' Day, observed on November 1st, is a Christian holiday honoring all saints, celebrated with church services and prayers. It is a day to remember the faithful who have reached heaven and inspire others to follow their example.
Veterans Day, observed on November 11, honors all military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a day to recognize their bravery, sacrifices, and dedication, celebrated with ceremonies, parades, and moments of reflection across the country.
World Children's Day, celebrated on November 20, promotes children's rights, well-being, and worldwide unity. Established by the United Nations, it highlights the importance of improving children’s lives and encourages action to create a better future for every child.
Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, is a holiday for giving thanks and gathering with loved ones. Traditionally, it includes a meal with foods like turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, and it’s a time to reflect on gratitude and togetherness.
Native American Heritage Day, observed on the Friday after Thanksgiving, honors the rich culture, history, and contributions of Native American peoples. It serves as a day for recognizing the challenges they have faced and promoting education and understanding of Indigenous heritage and rights.
Dress Warm
It is hard to keep up with the changing weather...especially when we have 80 degree days at the start of November! With the cold weather coming soon, and the chillier mornings, please make sure your child is dressed properly for the weather and has a coat/jacket to wear for their outdoor recess. We go out as often as we can, unless it is too cold, rainy or snowy.
McGovern Food Drive
McGovern School will be running a food drive from November 4th through November 15th. All donations will benefit the Medway Food Pantry and the Medway Village Food Pantry. If you are able to donate, please click the link below for a list of most needed items. Thank you kindergarten team for sponsoring our food drive!
Picture Retake Day
School Picture Retake day is set for Friday November 22, 2024. Retake day is for new students and staff members, transfer students, or for anyone who may have missed the initial picture day, OR for anyone who was unhappy with their original picture and would like to give it another try. If a student would like the retake photo to replace the original photo, please have the student return the original picture package to the photographer on picture day. We will replace the original package at no additional cost.
If this is the first time being photographed, just have the student/staff go to the camera and we’ll create a proof for them that will be sent to the school (and/or to their family email if we have that information). These proofs will be delivered approx. 4 weeks after picture day. An order code will be on the proof along with ordering instructions.
