Charger Check-In
October 17, 2024
A Note from Ms. Owens
What a fabulous week we are having at St. Catherine! Wednesday, we welcomed huge numbers of Grandfriends to visit classrooms and take part in activities. Thursday, we started the day with our annual lockdown drill with the Oak Lawn Police Department. Our students performed incredibly well - whether they did a traditional lockdown (PK-2) or practiced evading or barricading (3-8). The OLPD praised the children for how quiet and serious they were during the drill. Our teachers did an outstanding job of preparing the students. Also on Thursday, Mrs. Felmon's class and Mrs. Williams' class enjoyed a pizza lunch as each room had a winning student from the Selfie with a Priest Challenge. Friday, tomorrow, we will have our annual walk-a-thon, the Chargers Walk. Students are excited for the event! 💖🤍🖤
You may recall that last year, our faculty and staff participated in EBRS training (Escape, Barricade, Resist, Survive) with the Beacon Training Group. On Friday, October 25, Beacon will return to SCA for a refresher training. This is a professional development day for faculty and staff. Students do not have school.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are Thursday, October 24.
- Families can sign up for a time slot with their child's teacher.
- If your child is in 4th-8th grade, you should sign up with your child's homeroom teacher only.
- If you would like to meet with another one of your child's teachers, please contact them to make arrangements for a different day.
- Mrs. O'Connor, Ms. Tesmond and Mrs. Casey, our resource teachers, have time slots on the the sign up.
- Conferences will be available both in-person and virtually via Google Meet.
- The sign up will close on Wednesday, October 23.
As we prepare for the coming of girls volleyball, boys basketball and indoor soccer, please make note of the requirement for a current school physical - as well as a waiver and concussion form - in order to participate. This includes evaluations and practices in addition to games. If your child does not have these items on file with the school, they will not be able to participate. This is a state requirement.

Eat & Earn at Culver's on Thursday, October 24
Thank you to everyone who ordered dinner from Lou Malnati's last month - our Eat & Earn raised $314.60!
Our next Eat & Earn is coming up at Culver's of Evergreen Park (9515 S. Kedzie) on Thursday, October 24 - the night of Parent-Teacher Conferences. The event runs from 5PM-8PM. The owner of this location is extremely generous to SCA, so please grab dinner to show him our appreciation for his continued support!
Culver's has also requested the help of volunteers during the Eat & Earn. If you plan to dine in, this is an easy way to knock out an hour of your required FSA volunteer hours. Our 7th & 8th graders are welcome to volunteer if an adult is in the restaurant with them. Responsibilities include helping to clean off tables and/or run orders to tables, with the main task of volunteers being to act as greeters to welcome, thank and inform guests about the Eat & Earn event. The donation we receive will be reduced if we are unable to provide a couple volunteers so please consider! If you're able to help that night, please complete this Google Form.

Hot Dog Lunch for Chargers Walk
Once again, the School Advisory Board (SAB) will be providing a hot dog lunch for all students on the day of the Chargers Walk.
- The lunch will include an all-beef hot dog and a bag of Lay's potato chips for lunch. The hot dog buns are from Aunt Millie's Bakery. Here is their allergen information.
- We will have hot dogs with no buns for students who have a gluten-free diet or who have a sesame allergy.
- If your child does not like hot dogs, please send them with a lunch.
- Students who normally get milk will be able to have milk.
- Our SAB will also be providing ICEE Squeeze Ups for a sweet treat. The flavor options are sour apple, blue raspberry and cherry. The link above will take you to the nutritional information page for those who need to review it for allergy concerns. The sour apple flavor is not listed as a flavor on ICEE's webpage.
- According the ICEE web page, these "are free from allergens as defined by the FDA."
- For those students whose families have shared allergy-concerns (specifically with dyes) with the school, we purchased Outshine popsicles in mango, pineapple and watermelon.
Carnival Drop-Off & Pick-Up for Chargers Walk
On the day of our Chargers Walk, Friday, October 18, we will move to a Carnival Drop-Off & Pick routine that day. This will allow the company facilitating the Chargers Walk to set-up in the south parking lot.
Our PK3 and PK4 grades will enter through the doors they normally use. They dismiss out the Alexandria Center doors onto Kedvale. As they usually do, they will dismiss a few minutes before the rest of the school
Our K-4th grades will enter and dismiss out the church doors onto Kedvale.
These grade levels will have a slightly staggered dismissal beginning with K, 2nd, 1st, 3rd and then 4th.
Our 5th-8th grades will enter and dismiss out the Alexandria Center doors onto Kedvale.
All parking lots will be closed. Families can park on 107th or 105th and walk to the church or Alexandria Center doors.
Please be patient. Pick up will likely take a bit longer than usual.
Boys Basketball Evaluations
Evaluations for 6th, 7th and 8th grades will take place at SCA on Wednesday, October 16 and Wednesday, October 23 at the following times:
- 8th grade from 4:00-5:15
- 7th grade from 5:15-6:30
- 6th grade from 6:30-7:45
Your child must have a current school physical on file in order to participate in evaluations. If your child comes to an evaluation and does not have a current school physical, he will not be allowed to take part in the evaluation. The families of those students who do not meet this requirement have been notified by our school nurse.
Players are encouraged to attend both evaluations. If they cannot for some reason, please reach out and let us know. We will do the 4th and 5th grades later in the month when time allows.
Parents should drop their child off in the parking lot. Parents are not allowed in the gym or the vestibule. Students just need a water bottle and should wear appropriate athletic gear. We will provide them with a jersey and number to be worn during evaluations. If you have any further questions, please reach out to both John Donahue jdonahue1487@gmail.com and Tom Wood tomwood88@yahoo.com.
