A Message from the Principal
It is difficult to believe that we only have one more Monday attendance day before the summer break is upon us! As a friendly reminder, this Friday is a half-day for our students, with no school on Monday, May 29th, for Memorial Day.
Last week, Greeley School hosted a Great Lakes Naval Band quintet, as well as the Skokie-Washburne Orchestra and Jazz Band. These brief musical moments provided our Greeley community an opportunity to come together in celebration as we head into our final weeks of school. It was wonderful to see former Greeley students perform and receive recognition from our current student body.
Lastly, I felt it important to share that our staff members have started packing up for the summer, as construction will immediately begin after students are dismissed. When visiting our school, you may see boxes stacked in classrooms, large spaces, or hallways. We will continue to remind our students that this is not a sign that learning is over and there is much to accomplish in our final three weeks of school!
Sincerely,
Joshua Swanner
Principal
Interested in Strings for next year?
It's that time of year again! Strings recruitment assemblies will be taking place this month at Crow Island, Greeley and Hubbard Woods for current 1st-3rd grade students.
Fourth grade students will have a separate assembly where they will learn more about the program at Skokie. Fourth graders can also start with any string instrument, including the string bass!! Students will be introduced to the instruments they could learn at school: violin, viola, cello and string bass (4th graders only). Registration will be via Google forms which you can access here.
If you have more than one child signing up next year, feel free to use the same form for both (all) of your children. The registration deadline will be Friday, June 10th.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to working with your children again next year!

Communication
Communication plays an important role in our math instruction. Through communicating about their thinking, students strengthen and demonstrate their understanding. They also learn to think critically and flexibly by working to understand another’s thinking and approach. Our classrooms are filled with whole class and smaller group discussions around math problems facilitated by the teacher. One of the key ways teachers respond to students’ needs for challenge or additional support is through the types of questions they ask them in these conversations. Students are frequently asked to share how they are thinking about a problem, what strategy they are using and why they chose it, and how their thinking is similar or different from their classmates. These conversations are opportunities for higher level thinking and challenge. Not only are students asked to communicate their thinking verbally, but also to represent it visually through pictures, equations, and models. This written communication is important and challenging work. Finally, our classrooms provide continual opportunities for collaboration between students encouraging them to learn with and from one another. Through games, discussions, and partner work we strive to build a mathematical community that is simultaneously rigorous, supportive, and engaging.- Thursday, 5/25: Kindergarten Parent Open House (more details to come); 6:15pm
