Social Studies Current Events
We are excited to share more information about our Social Studies Current Events program designed to engage our students in thoughtful discussions about important global and local issues. Current Events happen throughout the year in 8th grade Social Studies, but will occur at times during 6th and 7th grade as well. Our goal is to create a safe, respectful, and educational environment where students can learn to think critically about the world around them. Below is information for families that will help explain our approach to conversations surrounding Current Events at Marie Murphy.
Teacher as Moderator: Our teachers will serve as moderators during discussions, ensuring that conversations remain focused, respectful, and productive. They will guide the discussions and provide context to help students understand different perspectives.
The teachers’ responsibility is to remain objective in order to allow all respective viewpoints. The intent of teachers asking questions is to have students think of other aspects or to consider other perspectives and should not be viewed as their personal support for or against a topic.
Objectivity in Comments and Viewpoints: We encourage students to express their ideas and opinions. However, we emphasize the importance of keeping comments and viewpoints objective. Our focus is on understanding and analyzing different perspectives rather than promoting personal opinions.
Exploring Multiple Sides: Every topic has multiple sides, and we aim to present a balanced view by discussing various perspectives. This approach helps students develop a well-rounded understanding of complex topics and teaches them the importance of considering different viewpoints.
Rights with Obligations: As students exercise their right to express their thoughts, they will also learn about the obligations that come with these rights. This includes respecting others’ opinions, listening actively, and engaging in civil discourse.
We believe this program will help our students develop critical thinking skills, learn to engage in respectful dialogue, and become informed citizens. Your support in reinforcing these guidelines of our program at home will be greatly appreciated.
Schedule Names: Maroon & Gold Days
We have new names for our various schedules. Maroon will be the name of our schedule that typically runs on Monday and Friday. Gold will be the name of our schedule that typically runs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These are the days of the week when we have Advisory or Viking Time. This is something that will be helpful to students and staff as we work to keep the schedules organized.
NEW TRIER HIGH SCHOOL SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT ON SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH
The New Trier High School Board of Education is embarking on a search for a new superintendent following Dr. Paul Sally’s planned retirement on June 30, 2025, and all community members are invited to share their thoughts. Hazard, Young, and Attea (HYA) is assisting the Board in the superintendent search and wants to know the qualifications and characteristics you value in a superintendent as well as what you see as the district’s strengths, challenges, and immediate and long-term priorities.
The Superintendent Search Survey takes less than 8 minutes to complete and will close at midnight on Friday, September 6th. Community members are also encouraged to attend one of these upcoming forums:
