The Buzz
SPRING TERM - 16TH JANUARY 2025
Message from the Head of School
The children have had a fantastic second week back in school and are really challenging themselves in their learning. We are really proud of their attitude to learning and the effort they are putting in.
We had an assembly on Tuesday with Mark from the RNLI and it was lovely to have Reception children join KS1. Their behaviour was excellent and they engaged really well in the topic. Water safety is so important, particularly as we live close to the Thames. We were surprised to hear how many call outs they receive per year purely from our stretch of the Thames between Richmond and Hampton court. Mark told me that there is a fatality every year in this stretch of the Thames.
The children were taught to stay together with their family when they are near water. If they get into difficulty float whilst their body gets used to the cold and not to attempt to swim. To raise their hand to alert passers by and not to wave as people may assume they are saying hello.
Mark taught us how to help someone in difficulty by throwing them a float attached to the safety boards found along the river and call 999 alerting them to the location. He also showed us the different flags used on the beach to help us know if it is safe to swim.
Today we have had a visit from Bounce beyond and they will be back tomorrow. Each class has really enjoyed their session. They make physical activity extremely fun and a great alternative to ipads and computer games!

A huge well done also goes to those children who have worked hard on their online maths challenges in Numbots, completing an incredible number of games and levels - very impressive!
Keep up the good work, everyone!

🟨 Nursery
Quick get your hiking boots on and grab your binoculars...this week the Nursery children went on an explorers adventure in the search for a Friendly Monster! Inspired by our story of the week, We're Going to Find a Monster by Malorie Blackman, the children have been thinking about who this Friendly Monster might be and where he may live. We thought about what the monster might look like too: does it have flippers, wings, claws, horns, 3 eyes and 6 legs? And with these ideas , the children have been using their creativity to craft their own friendly monsters using bright coloured paper, shapes and googly eyes. Plus, we have seen lots of sculpting monsters out of playdough, really bringing to life their imaginations. We have loved seeing all their creations!
This week, the children also transformed themselves into jumping jacks as they participated in their very first Bounce Beyond session. Through this guided jumping session on trampolines which was set to music they developed their gross motor strength, sense of rhythm and listening skills as well as having lots of fun. The children had so much fun and it was great to see their big smiles as they brought out their inner Bryony Page!
We wonder where next week's learning adventure will take us...hint...we are taking a trip around the world!
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
As we are in the middle of Winter, this means we are in the heart of cold and flu season. This week would be a great opportunity to talk to your child about to keep those runny noses, sniffles and coughs at bay. Think about the importance of washing hands, using tissues and catching those coughs with your elbows. Why not try singing a song whilst washing your hands, really making sure those soap suds appear?
🟥 Reception
This week our focus text has been 'We're Going to Find the Monster' which we've used as a hook to discuss what a journey involves. The repeated refrains in the story offer lots of opportunity for choral speaking to develop the children's understanding of sentence structure and to expand their vocabulary. Together, we drew and annotated a story map to show the key moments of the story and the children enjoyed re-enacting parts of the narrative in their choosing time using props to support.
On Wednesday we enjoyed an assembly from RNLI which addressed how to stay safe in the water.
On Thursday the children loved Bounce Beyond. Through a guided jumping session set to music they developed their gross motor strength, sense of rhythm and listening skills as well as having lots of fun.
In maths, the children were introduced to the concept of 'one more' through making staircases to five with Unifix cubes and linking to Numberblocks characters.
In phonics we have introduced three new sounds - '/j/, /w/ and /z/. The children have applied their phonic knowledge to read and write cvc and cvcc words and to write a dictated sentence.

This week, you could talk to your child about the RNLI assembly. Have they ever been in water outside of a swimming pool? What did it feel like or look like? Can they remember some ways to stay safe in the water? What did the different flags mean?
🟦 Year 1
We welcomed Bounce Beyond back to Hampton Infants this week. The children had great fun working out on the mini trampolines, throwing some energetic moves and shapes to the disco tunes whilst working up a much-need sweat in this chilly weather. A fantastic way to bounce into a new term!
This week we introduced our new focus book ‘Katie in London’ by James Mayhew. We took time immersing ourselves in the text focusing on new vocabulary and the landmarks which feature in the story. We participated in a scavenger hunt, searching for the landmarks which were hidden around the school. We then sequenced them in order of which they appeared in the story.
In maths, we have been looking at numbers to 20, working particularly on our understanding of teen numbers and how many tens and ones are in each. We have also been counting and finding one more and one less than a given number, using diennes and number lines to help us.
In science, we have been investigating which objects float and which objects sink, and identifying what materials they are made from. We made predictions and discussed our methods for carrying out the investigation, ensuring we thought about how to make the test fair. We then tested each material, recording our findings and results in a table, before discussing our conclusions and reasons for why certain object floated or sank.
This term’s PE topics are dance and target games. During dance lessons, we have been using weather as our theme to explore pathways in dance. We have been using changes in our speed and direction to make our dances more interesting, and have been counting in beats of eight to keep in time to the music. In target games, we have been practising our throwing stance and keeping our eyes on the target, and using our opposite hand to point at the target before timing carefully the release of our throw.
In art, we have been looking at colour, focusing on warm and cold colours and identifying primary and secondary colours. We have also been learning about the artist, Alma Thomas, and how she used colour in her own artwork before trying our hand at recreating our own versions.
🟩 Year 2
This week in Year 2, we continued our "Sky Riders" topic. In history, the children were exploring different types of transport and discovering when, where, and who invented them. The children created a timeline to showcase their findings.
In English, they also learned more about the Wright Brothers through our text, completing a book review while applying their recently learned skills of using apostrophes.
In Maths, we have started our new topic of money, practicing with coins and notes to make different amounts. The children are becoming more confident in recognising the various coins and notes used in England and are improving their ability to use them to create different totals. We encourage, if possible, to support their learning by role-playing with money at home and giving them opportunities to use real money in everyday situations to deepen their understanding.
We have been excited to start our new "Robot Algorithms" topic in Computing. The children explored how and when we use instructions, and learned how crucial it is for instructions to be in the correct order. Through role-play, the children worked in pairs, taking turns to be robots and following a series of instructions to navigate around the classroom. This activity helped them understand the importance of being clear and precise when giving instructions.

Visiting HISN - Drinks on site
If you are coming into school to view your child's work, watch an assembly, showcase etc please do not bring drinks to the school site for health and safety reasons. Thank you.
Medical/dental appointments
Do not forget to send in confirmation of appointments if your child is absent during the day for a medical/dental/ appointment. This makes it easier to code your child's absence correctly. As per our policy we would be grateful if appointments where possible could be made outside school hours.
NHS Pharmacy First Service
The NHS Pharmacy First Service enables children and adults to get convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment where appropriate, for seven common conditions without the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment? Accessing the service may mean that we can help children feel better and get back to school as quickly as possible, as well as supporting parents/carers to also get better if they are unwell with one of the conditions covered under the service.
There is no need to make an appointment; parents or carers can pop into their local Boots pharmacy with their child and ask for help under the service.
Support for the following conditions can be accessed under the service, free of charge (unless NHS prescription charges apply):
Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
Infected insect bites and stings (aged 1 year and over)
Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)
- Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
