Weekly Devotional & Prayer
It Takes Teamwork
After giving an impromptu talk about our garden at the recent Associational meeting, I thought about what I could have said but did not say. It would have been more meaningful if I had talked about how it takes TEAMWORK to produce a church garden. We have had so many church members who have been a part of the Lottie Stowe Community Garden at St. Paul over the years.
I really don't know what went into the garden before I arrived at St. Paul but I do know that someone or some team had to have the idea in the first place. Supplies had to be collected and the raised beds built and filled with soil (a Herculean task). Since I have joined the garden team, church members have installed an underground pipe to carry water to the garden (another Herculean task). Each season the soil has been tilled and compost and fertilizer has been added. Seeds and seedlings have been donated and so many people have turned out to fill the beds with new plants. Wooden stakes have been cut to hold up the plants upright as they grow. Fencing and trellises have been built. Volunteers have watered the plants and an irrigation system has recently been installed. Produce has been harvested and delivered to the Coastal Bend Food Bank. Let us not forget that an area was prepared for composting and boards put around the area to contain the compost. Members have donated vegetables scraps and coffee grounds so that one day, in the not too distant future, there will be organic matter to feed the plants in the vegetable beds.
As I pondered all that went into producing a healthy, productive church garden, the thought came to mind that this is also what happens in a healthy, productive and growing church. There are so many jobs to be done and the pastor can't do it all.
Church members at St. Paul have to be the hardest working and most willing group of people that I have ever seen at a church. And I have been involved in a lot of churches. Many tasks are completed "behind the scenes" and no one knows about them because the people doing them are not looking for recognition or praise. Groups at St. Paul bond together to see that an activity or event happens without a hitch. Well, maybe a little hitch, sometimes.
At St. Paul we love each other, support each other and work well together as a team. Could this be, at least a part of, the reason why St. Paul continues to grow?
May God bless each and every one as we continue in His service and for His glory.
