SHS/PGS Principal's Newsletter
October 2024 Edition
Principal's Message
Dear Parents, Guardians and Significant Adults-
Our theme for the 24/25 school year, "Space for All of Us," continues to grow. All 3 schools got off to a smooth and highly anticipated start to the new school year.
- For SHS, September 24th marked the midway point of Term 1. You can see your SHS student’s current progress in the LMS gradebook. Appointment Day for Term 2 classes is October 10th and Term 2 classes begin Monday, October 14th.
- At the Port Gardner Family Partnership, high school level classes began September 9th, while all other families attended Student Learning Plan sessions with teachers that week. All students started attending classes the week of September 16th - with an introductory Kinder visit on September 13th. PGS monthly progress will be submitted October 1st. Oral Reading Fluency testing will begin the week of October 7th.
- HS Online Options (formerly Online High School) last to day to enroll in classes was September 17th and the last day to drop classes was September 20th. Class counts are fabulous and a few new courses were added to the catalog this year. Any new enrollment or class changes must now be requested through counselors for principal approval - special circumstance only.
Please mark October 2nd at 6:00 PM on your calendars for our SHS Significant Adult Night/Open House starting in the SHS/PGS cafeteria, then moving to the gymnasium. This will be an opportunity to meet with your student’s teachers, see their curriculum, and hear about additional programs at Sequoia High School. I look forward to seeing you.

Statistics - OMT601
Statistics is a high school statistics course with a modern, data analytic approach allowing students to uncover, display, and explore patterns in data. Most data sets are real, based on up-to-date research, historical case studies, and student collected data. Students systematically use tools to build a coherent description of data-set patterns and to describe patterns in the language of their applied contexts. Students are led through a series of guided discussions followed by practice problems allowing the ideas to build on one another to enable students to grasp the big picture of statistical reasoning. The course is intended to prepare the student for future college-level courses and beyond.
Yoga Core - OPE216
Yoga Core is an introductory course which fuses the fundamentals of yoga practice, breathing techniques, proper alignment and mindfulness with core strengthening exercises. This class offers the student a private and comfortable home setting to learn the basics of yoga postures including various yoga disciplines all while experiencing the benefits of increased strength, flexibility as well as a heightened sense of wellness.
Physics in the Universe - OSC413 & 414
The Physics in the Universe course integrates physical science, earth and space sciences and engineering. In this laboratory science course, students engage in science and engineering practices such as defining problems, planning and carrying out investigations, engaging in argument from evidence and designing solutions to real-world problems which require the study of the connections between forces, motion, and energy as related to the formation of the universe and Earth’s structure and composition.
