MRS. KILIAN'S WEEKLY UPDATE
September 8 - September 11
Note from Mrs. KILIAN - I AM BACK!!!!!!
I am so excited to be returning to school tomorrow!
What a FUN week for the FUN RUN! I hated missing it but enjoyed watching the videos - it made me smile. Thank you all for ALL you do for our school. You're the reason we have an awesome school. Thanks so much for all of your donations and dedication. I think they all really liked this fundraiser - FUN!!!
The homework card should have come home Friday. Tomorrow I am going to put a clear sleeve in your child's green take home folder. Please put the homework inside it weekly. It will house it well for your convenience at home. On Friday's you can change it out and keep the old ones for review.
Math - I will be sending this home stapled together for the week's homework. The parent letter is for you to keep at home. This explains how we are also teaching it at school. Do NOT send this page back to school. The rest of the week please just tear off each page as it is assigned and return that day.(the page you do the night before)
Timed Tests - I will be starting these this week. It's for practice and fun. It's a race against themselves. I will chart their progress with ice cream scoops. Please practice your flashcards - I will send notification as they pass each group.
Phonics- Please do this page with your child. Read the directions as to what you are to do with them. Make sure they are coding the words and reading them to you. This is also how the assessments will be.
Scholastic Book Club -I am a little late sending this in. I will submit the order tomorrow so if you would still like to order there is time.
Focus Wall (on the back of the homework card)

IMPORTANT LIBRARY INFORMATION
Mrs. Gossett has asked that our library books be returned on THURSDAY, so she can get them checked in for our Library time on Friday.
Saxon Phonics
Please refer to the parent help letter at the bottom of the homework and help your child by checking to see if the coding is correct,
At this time they should be able to tell you 2 rules by heart and know how to code:
1. A vowel followed by a consonant is short; code it with a breve.
2. An open accented vowel is long; code it with a macron.
It is so important to practice this at home because the rules will add up so keeping up will help them become proficient readers. Also, when they are reading and come across a word they don't know please refer to the rules and have them use them to figure out a word.
- On the top, the new letter will be introduced. Your child will need to write 5 of the capital letters and 5 of the lowercase letter. I ask that you sit down with your child and make sure he/she is forming the letter correctly according to the Zaner-Bloser printing guide I included in your open house folder. You can also use the button below to see the correct way to form the letters. All letters start from the top and your child should put a space between each letter. The circle letters like a, d, g, o, q are tricky so please help your child get the correct starting point. These letters DO NOT start at the bottom. Letters b & p start by making the stick first.
Saxon Rules covered
- Vowel Rule 1: A vowel followed by a consonant is short; code it with a breve.
- Vowel Rule 2: An open, accented vowel is long; code it with a macron.
Lesson 2 math test
Lesson 2 math test was a little rough. The kids have to be able to show work for the strategies being taught. We worked on this all week. I had the test up on the panel and showed them exactly what they needed to do on each problem. I all but gave them the answer to each problem. This particular math series is all about teaching the kids strategies that will help them figure out problems. The kids must show me that they understand each strategy. Just like phonics, these strategies build upon each other.
MATH LESSON 3
NEW LESSON THIS WEEK:
Lesson 3 - Add and subtract in word problems.
We will be using the same strategies as in lesson 2. They can show their work using whatever works best for them. BUT, they must show their work.
