Ms. Carrie (driver of bus #80) and Mr. Miles (driver of bus #84) are expecting a baby around November 10th. They both have Ridgeway students on their routes and are AMAZING drivers. Bus drivers are critical to education, and having drivers who connect with students, hold high expectations and keep everyone safe and loved are a true treasure. Ms. Carrie is hoping to stay home with the baby for four weeks, but with zero paid maternity leave, she will go without pay the entire time. We'd love to bless them with some support! Ridgeway parent Lauren Merriman has generously organized a way for parents to contribute if they choose - see below:

Lauren's Venmo is @merrimanx4 if you'd like to make a monetary donation she can consolidate them and provide Carrie with one combined donation and/or gift to her! No amount is too small! OR her Cashapp is also included in case anyone prefers to make a direct monetary donation to help support their expenses while she is on unpaid maternity leave! $carrieisawesome98
QR codes for both Laruen's Venmo and Carrie's Cashapp are below.
Forget to order Ridgeway spirit wear?
The Ridgeway shop is opening back up for one week only. Starting Monday, October 21 to Friday, October 25.
Unit Notes
Unit A
Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for joining us on our field trip! Please be mindful of the weather changes. This is a great time to check your child’s “Just in Case” clothes to update them for the weather.
Reading: We finished up learning about pumpkins. We have moved on to learning about question words, asking and answering questions about a story, and recognizing major events in a story.
Writing: We are continuing to work on our personal narratives. We are working on making sure our stories have characters, settings, and a beginning, middle and end.
Fundations/Phonics:
Blades/Horn: We are continuing to work on short vowels and the high frequency words: little, play, out, with. We are also practicing building words and handwriting.
Mincke/Triplett: We are learning the letters d & s and the high frequency word can.
Math:
Blades/Horn: We are continuing to practice adding and subtracting from 0-10 and 0-20.
Mincke/Triplett: We are working on comparing numbers and recognizing attributes of 2-D shapes.
Unit B
- We had so much fun on Bird Day! We learned about owl pellets, raptors, and banding. The Columbia Audubon Society presents such a fun experience for kids!
- Math:
- 2nd grade math has just finished unit 2. Unit 3 is all about subtraction so fast recall of subtraction facts is crucial. Keep practicing those facts at home with flashcards, games, worksheets, etc. 2nd grade students should now be able to recall facts with sums up to 20 without counting on their fingers. After unit 3 they should also know subtraction facts.
- 3rd grade math students are learning how to solve number stories, as well as multiplication facts. We also started cursive! Remember, no cursive should be used at school unless we are doing a lesson together.

Specialist News
From the Art Room with Mrs. Lillig
Hello, Ridgeway!
The Art Room is a busy place right now.
Unit A has been working on interpreting facial expressions and translating them to portraits. They have also talked about what our emotions look like “artistically”: what colors do you think of when you are happy? Sad? Angry? What types of shapes and lines show those feelings? This is all wrapping up in a multi-media work of art entitled “Me and My Big Big Feelings”. They are looking so fabulous already!
Unit B learned about Vincent Van Gogh and his artwork, focusing on Starry Night. They are creating our own interpretation of the painting several materials, and I am excited to see how they all turn out!
Unit C is taking our One Read this year to heart. They are each choosing a dog or cat up for adoption through Columbia’s Second Chance and creating an adoption poster for them. These will be copied and posted about town on bulletin boards, windows, and any other places we get permission to put them. Several have mentioned they might know places they could stick one, so if they start asking questions about Uncle Frank’s office window, that is why. Our mission is to help find Forever Homes for as many critters as possible. (Also, so sorry if you have received any kid-pressure to adopt a dog or cat!)
All in all, we are all having a great time in art, and I am so excited with all the creativity I am seeing this year!
Creatively,
Mrs. Lillig
One Read
Thank you to all the families who participated in this year’s Ridgeway One Read! Students enjoyed a popcorn party this afternoon to celebrate the end of the book. Tic Tac Toe sheets can still be turned in next week- the deadline is Friday October 25.
If you are looking for something to read next, you can try the sequel to Dogtown: Mouse and His Dog. This story is told from the perspective of the mouse and the main dog character is Buster, the “bounce back” from the first book.
