Emmett Ensures Educational Excellence
Happy Spring from Emmett School District!
Message from Superintendent Woods
Dear Emmett School District Community,
As we approach the much-anticipated spring break, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible achievements and successes we've witnessed in our schools. Our students are thriving, and it's a testament to the dedication and hard work of every member of our school community.
As we gear up for the Spring state tests, I want to highlight the preparation that goes into ensuring our students are ready to excel. While these tests are crucial benchmarks, it's important to recognize that each of us also utilizes a variety of smaller benchmark assessments throughout the year to monitor progress and tailor instruction to individual student needs.
To all our educators, administrators, support staff, and students, I want to express my deepest appreciation for your commitment to excellence. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and it is truly valued.
I encourage each and every one of you to take the opportunity to spend quality time with your family and loved ones. It's essential to recharge your batteries and return refreshed and rejuvenated for the remainder of the school year.
Emmett is a community that looks to the future, and we have laid a strong foundation that will continue to support the growth and development of our students, facilities, professional development opportunities, and extracurricular activities.
We are truly blessed to live in Gem County, where every student has the opportunity to thrive and learn in a supportive and nurturing environment. Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to the success of our students and our district.
Sincerely,
Craig Woods
Superintendent
Emmett School District
10-Year Maintenance Plan
Emmett School District’s updated 10-Year Facilities Maintenance Plan was presented to the ESD Board of Trustees in a special meeting on January 29. This meeting was for informational purposes only, and there were no action items. Such plans are standard tools for school districts, and ESD’s plan was last updated in 2015. Assistant Superintendent Bob Hyde worked closely with the ESD Maintenance Department to carefully evaluate each school facility in the district. The meeting can be viewed on our YouTube channel. The information shared in the meeting is publicly available within the agenda.
Our buildings are showing their age and will need to be addressed to ensure the safety of our students now and in the future. ESD will not move forward with any solutions without the full involvement of the community in every step of the process.

'24-'25 Calendar Update
At the February Regular Board Meeting, the board of trustees addressed the scheduled topic of next year's school calendar. Due to the pending legislation of HB 521 and its potential impact on district funding, the board decided to table the decision on the calendar until the March Regular Board Meeting.
HB 521, which you can view at the link below, could bring substantial additional funding for local school districts, particularly for building and maintenance projects. However, there are provisions in the bill, particularly on page 11, that may tie the funding to specific requirements such as the number of days or hours in school. This raises concerns about the eligibility of districts with a 4-day calendar.
The potential impact of HB 521 and the need for further information have led the board to postpone the decision on the calendar until March. The amount of funding ESD could receive from HB 521 is estimated to be around $12 million.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the calendar committee and all participants in the calendar surveys for their hard work and input. We look forward to continuing the discussion at our March board meeting once we have more information on all aspects of potential legislation.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate this important decision for our district's future. The board is expected to address the issue of next year's calendar at the March 11 Regular School Board Meeting.

Also, a special shoutout to everyone who contributed to the student council fundraiser for the Humphries family.

EHS Restroom Remodel - Before & After!
The makeover of two sets of EHS restrooms is complete! Over Christmas break, the atrium and gymnasium visitor restrooms received a much-needed face-lift. Check out these before and after pics!
This project was funded through planned allocations from the general fund, This was made possible because Covid funding allowed for the redistribution of funds normally allocated for other purposes.
Thanks to the flexibility these funds provided, the school district could invest in much-needed maintenance projects such as this one.
Special thanks to local company–NHI (Nick’s Home Improvement) for doing quick and thorough work that made such a difference for our school buildings and the students and guests who use them

EHS Bleachers Update!
Our new bleachers have arrived and are being assembled!
This project is made possible through an amazing, generous donation of $100,000 from the class of 2005. This money was donated with the purpose of it being used to update the bleachers and bring graduation back to Emmett. The school board voted to cover the remaining amount with school district funds.
Our new bleachers will meet ADA compliance, making our facilities accessible to all. Whereas our old bleachers were long designated as condemned, the new bleachers will increase capacity and meet safety standards, providing a safe venue for events, preventing us from navigating the less-than-ideal logistics of graduation elsewhere, and positively impacting commerce in our community.
We’re excited to see the bleachers finished and ready to welcome EHS Graduation back home for our 2024 graduates!
A big thank you once again for the donation that sponsored this project and to all who are seeing it through to completion.
Attendance Update
We want your student at school! Attendance is so important to learning. A student who misses a single day loses 20% of the learning from that week. Here are a few things to remember.
If your child goes to the doctor, please ask for a note and submit it to the school. A doctor’s note will exempt an absence.
We appreciate you calling the school and letting us know when your child is sick. While we mark the absence as excused, it is NOT exempt. These absences still count as absences.
School attendance is vitally important to your child’s learning. We want your child to have all the tools needed to succeed. If you are experiencing challenges related to getting your child to school on time, we may be able to help! Please contact our attendance specialist, Mandie Moore at (208)365-6301
Free/Reduced Update
Currently, our district is at 43.06% Free and Reduced rate. There are so many programs that use this number for funding purposes in both the school district and community. We want to make sure all students are provided services they could qualify for.
Applications can be downloaded online and completed. Approved meal applications help stretch the family budget and also help with district funding. While approval doesn't affect current negative meal accounts, it can absolutely help going forward. The approved meal status also carries over into the fall.
We continue to accept donations to help out families in need.

ESD Principal for a Day
Thank you to all of our community members who participated in our 2024 Principal for a Day Event! We hope you enjoyed your time in our schools!
Participants spent the morning in one of our schools, experiencing the educational setting firsthand. Then they all met at PR2TA for a delicious lunch prepared by the culinary students. We enjoyed getting to host our community members for this event and hearing feedback from their experiences.
Please watch for our Principal for a Day event next year! We'd love for you to participate!
Honoring Captain Ben Moulton: A Final Welcome Home
As many of you know, Captain Ben Moulton recently lost his life in his service as a U.S. Marine. He was a helicopter pilot and was conducting routine training with four other Marines when his helicopter went down in the mountains outside of San Diego.
Ben was one of our own. He grew up in Emmett and graduated from Emmett High School in 2015. His body was returned to Idaho on Thursday, February 22, and was escorted from the Boise Airport back to Emmett.
As a community, we were privileged to honor Ben's memory and service by lining the streets of Emmett on Thursday, February 22, as we welcomed him home one last time.
To all who came to honor Captain Ben Moulton...
It was a beautiful homecoming.
Thank you.

ESSER Funds Feedback
Last week, Emmett School District hosted an ESSER III Community Hearing to discuss ESSER funding and ideas of how to allocate the remaining funds that must be spent by September.
If you were unable to attend, the meeting can be viewed at this link on our YouTube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt4PiNg0pH8
Also, we’d still love to still hear your feedback! What are your ideas for how to allocate the remaining ESSER funds to best meet the needs of our students and schools? Please take a moment to share your thoughts by filling out the online form. Also, please note there are specific guidelines on how the money must be spent.
Thank you for your input and being a part of this process! We look forward to hearing your ideas and effectively allocating the remaining Covid funds!
Calendar Changes
Due to the number of school closure days within this school year, it is necessary to compensate for some of the lost learning hours. Though our school calendars normally include extra hours to allow for emergency closures, we have now exceeded those at the secondary level (grades 6-12).
To make up for these lost school hours, early release Fridays will now become full days of school for secondary students (grades 6-12) ONLY on the following days. Please note: elementary students (K-5) will observe early release as usual.
Grades 6-12 Full Fridays:
March 1
April 5
April 19
Also note that additional days on all levels may be necessary should Emmett School District require more days of school closure.
Teaching to Inspire Challenge
Educators have a powerful impact on the lives of students. We're challenging our staff, students, parents, and community to share stories of educators who've made a positive difference in their lives.
Share Your Story: We’d love to hear from you! Who's that special teacher that you felt truly cared about you? Who has positively impacted the lives of your children? We want to hear your stories!
Create a quick video sharing a positive story about an educator past or present and send it to us at info@isd221.net. Your stories have the power to inspire us all and celebrate the amazing educators in our community!
To see the videos that have been created so far, please check out some of these links to our Facebook page!

We are quickly moving into Spring, which means warmer weather, plants and flowers waking up, outdoor activities, and testing for our schools! The data we derive from testing is important. It provides feedback that tells us how we are doing with our goals of teaching, and it lets us know how we can improve.
However, Shadow Butte reminded us recently that while we can get caught up with all the data that goes along with education, we do so much more on a daily basis. While we work to assess and celebrate all the learning that we are achieving this school year, we also want to celebrate the untracked data that also matters and makes everything else possible. These are the connections and relationships that our staff form with our students.
This is one of the reasons we are asking parents, students, and staff to share videos of the positive impact educators have on the lives of their students. The untracked moments of love, support, and empathy shared with students every day are what make education possible. They are beautiful and deserve to be appreciated and celebrated.
Here’s to a spring filled with plenty of both tracked and untracked moments of success for all of Emmett School District.
