May 2024
Blooming in May!
We are excited to be back in the gardens enjoying the warmth, sunshine, and rain!
May's harvest of the month is radishes. These bright root vegetables grow quickly which is great for gardeners anticipating their first harvest! They are delicious raw, cooked, or pickled. Click the photo to learn more about radishes.
April Recap
Buckley
The 1st grade students learned about where their food comes from and how important the soil is for our food systems! They tasted corn and bean salsa.
The 3rd and 5th grade students learned about how to make common meals healthier and the impact that small every-day choices can make for our health. They made a veggie marinara pasta.
All students enjoyed a taste test of berry crisp with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
Buckley families also participated in Family Cooking Night! (See below).
Courtade
In the classrooms, we planted transplants of squash, pumpkins, lettuce, and herbs. The 5th grade students learned to make sushi with fresh local vegetables!
We held a waste audit in the cafeteria for students to see how much food goes to the landfill during their lunchtime. Thank you to Food Rescue of Northern Michigan for the materials and support to make this happen!
Courtade families also participated in the Family Cooking Night! (See below).
The Earth Day even was a huge success! All students participated in a school-wide Earth Day celebration. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, the Indigenous Ed program, Bay Area Recycling for Charities, and Oryana for making this event possible!

The K-2nd grade students planted transplants for the school garden! They enjoyed bean and corn salsa as their tasting.
