MBHS Newsletter
December 2024
As we roll out the December edition of the MBHS Newsletter, I just want to take a moment to share how much I have enjoyed my time in the building while subbing for Mr. Durand. The staff here are doing some amazing things to support students both inside and outside of the classroom. The ASB and clubs are creating opportunities for students to participate and connect with other students. I have also enjoyed the opportunities to meet with students and some parents in my time here.
There are several things taking place this month that you will find in this newsletter. There are also resources we wanted to make sure you knew were available to you. Please take a moment to review the information below.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS
MOUNT BAKER HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR
Come check out local businesses and support the band's trip to Disneyland while enjoying live holiday themed music and Cicchitti's Pizza!! The Holiday Craft Fair is happening on Saturday, December 14th from 10:00am to 3:00pm in the MBHS Cafeteria, 4936 Deming Road, Deming.
FFA FOOD DRIVE
Boxes were delivered to classrooms last week to collect food for the FFA Food Drive. This is a class competition with the winning PRIDE class getting donuts. The class that wins is based on the number of pounds of food brought in divided by the number of students in the PRIDE class. Please consider donating any canned goods or non-perishable items between now and December 20th.

ASB EVENTS
WINTER FORMAL | DEC. 14
On Saturday, December 14th, the MBHS ASB will be hosting our 2nd Annual Winter Formal Dance. This year's theme is Candyland, and we will again be at the Deming Log Show from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We urge parents to encourage their students to attend, and we also encourage students to make good choices during this event. This is meant to be a fun activity for our student community to look forward to in this rather cold and dark time of the year.
Tickets are $15 and will be on sale December 11-13 in the HS office during lunch. Want to bring a guest from another school? You MUST turn in a completed Dance Guest Pass (available in the HS office) by December 13th.
SPIRIT WEEK | DEC. 16-20
December 16-20 leads up to the beginning of Winter Break and is our last Spirit Week in 2024. We encourage students to be creative, and hope to bring some festive joy to our school campus during this holiday season. The themes are as follows:
- Monday - Holiday-themed Pajamas
- Tuesday - Tinsel Toes (festive socks)
- Wednesday - Winter Wonderland (wear white)
- Thursday - Sweater Weather
- Friday - Snow Gear

If your student struggles with excess down time and being away from friends, encourage them to use this Winter Break Success Plan to help them identify coping skills and resources that can help.
CAMPUS REMINDERS
BUS NOTES
Riding a different bus? You need a bus note from the office! If your student plans on getting off at a different stop or going home with a friend (riding a different bus), a green bus note is required from the school office. Please call before 1:00pm to request a bus note; we cannot write bus notes for students at the end of the school day.
STUDENT PARKING & CLOSED CAMPUS
Mount Baker has limited space for student parking. A reserved parking space can be purchased in the high school office for $20 per school year (as spaces are available).
- Students must have a parking permit in their window that matches the number on the parking spot; parking on campus without a permit will result in a minimum fine of $10.
- Permits will not be sold to students who do not have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, or owe past due fines or fees.
- Students who park inappropriately or violate on-campus parking rules are subject to school discipline and towing of their vehicle from campus at the vehicle owner’s expense.
- MBHS is not responsible for any damage, theft, vandalism, etc. that may occur.
- In order to ensure a safe and orderly parking situation, please follow all Student Vehicles & Parking Lot Rules listed in the MBHS Student Handbook.
MBHS is a closed campus. You may not leave the school grounds from the time you first arrive in the morning until the end of the day.
- If you have an appointment during the day, you must first have a parent/guardian contact the school attendance secretary or bring a note into the office, then sign out in the office before you leave campus. When returning to campus, you must sign back in at the office before going to class.
- Only individuals listed on the students emergency contact list will be able to pick up students during the school day. Prior parental notice is required before the school can release any student to an adult other than the parent or guardian.
- High School students are not allowed in the Junior High School building unless they are assigned there, have office permission, or have pre-arranged their visit with the staff. No drop-ins during the school day.
- High School students are permitted to go to their cars to get personal belongings including lunch. However, they are not permitted to stay in their cars for any reason including eating breakfast or lunch.
NOTES FROM THE NURSE
Thank you for working with us to keep our school community healthy and wishing you all a healthy and happy season! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our District Nurse, Nicole Paz, RN, at npaz@mtbaker.wednet.edu.
STAYING HEALTHY DURING COLD & FLU SEASON
As we move into the colder months, it’s important to keep our students healthy and ready to learn. Cold and flu season is upon us, and there are a few simple steps we can all take to help reduce the spread of illness:
- Wash Hands Frequently - encourage your child to wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.
- Cover Coughs and Sneezes - teach your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of their elbow to prevent germs from spreading.
- Stay Home When Sick - if your child is feeling unwell with a fever, cough, or other flu-like symptoms, please keep them home from school to rest and recover. They may return when they have been without a fever for 24 hours, without fever reducing medication. If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhea, they can return 24 hours after the last occurrence.
- Get Plenty of Rest and Hydrate - adequate sleep and drinking water are key to maintaining a strong immune system.
A REMINDER ABOUT VACCINES
The Fall is a great time to ensure that your child’s immunizations are up to date. If you are visiting the doctor because of illness, injury, or a routine check-up, consider discussing any vaccines that may be due. Vaccines are a critical part of protecting your child against serious illnesses, including chickenpox, whooping cough, and other preventable diseases.
GO BAKER ATHLETICS
Both boys and girls basketball and boys and girls wrestling have started the season with victories. Come out and support them throughout the month of December and into 2025.
