Report Cards Go Home
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
I continue to be impressed with the strength, resilience, kindness, and generosity of our Edison community. Despite the challenges of the new year, our community continues to come together in support of one another. Still many parents are asking how they can help. Below are a few ways you can help our community right now:
- Keep your child healthy! We have had lots of illnesses lately. We don't want students to miss school. Read Nurse Kristen's letter below about how to stay healthy.
- Be a valet at AM drop off. No training necessary. No sign ups necessary. Just show up at 8:00 am at the front of the school and we will give you an orange vest. You will open car doors for our smiling students. A great way to start the day!
- Model and discuss kindness. Our students are engaging in the Kindness and Justice Challenge this month. This week they are focusing on Kindness. Your actions are the best teacher. Show acts of kindness to your child and ask them what they are doing to be kind.
- Attend a School or Community Event. We have lots of events that bring our community together. We especially hope to see you at our annual Fiesta Familiar on Feb 28th (there will be food, dancing. lotería, and more!)
- Give a gift card donation. The SMMPTA is collecting gift cards to help families in need. We have some families that will benefit from this. You can help our community and the larger Santa Monica community by doing this. See the flyer below.
- Donate a book to our library. There is a library wishlist below for those that would like to buy a book that students have been asking for in the library.
- Take care of yourself and your family. Most important is that you do what is needed to take care of yourself and your family. If you can't do more than that, don't worry. We know that you are doing your best. If you are someone you know needs support, please let our community liaison, Jessica Hernandez know.
We greatly appreciate each and every one of you and all that you do to make Edison that wonderful community it is!
Warmly,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
WINTER ILLNESSES
Please read the letter below from Nurse Kristen
We are seeing lots of fevers, stomach bugs, cold symptoms, and diagnosed cases of influenza in our school community. Please review Guidance for Schools: Common Signs and Symptoms for information about when to keep your child at home and when they can return to school. Students must be fever-free overnight without the use of fever-reducing medication (Tylenol, Motrin) and well enough to participate meaningfully in class before returning to school. Please alert the Health Office (kfurano@smmusd.org and d.gonzalez@smmusd.org) if your child is out with a communicable condition like influenza, RSV, COVID, or norovirus.
Hydration, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet will help keep your family healthy. Good handwashing, wearing a mask, and staying home when sick are excellent ways to prevent the spread of infection. Getting a yearly flu shot is the best way to prevent getting the flu and reduces the risk of serious complications. Safe and effective vaccines are made each year. The Flu: What Parents Need to Know - HealthyChildren.org
Please contact a health care provider if your child needs medical care. If your child needs medication at school please have their doctor complete this form SANTA MONICA – MALIBU UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Medication at School Form
For more information, visit the SMMUSD Health Services page Health Services / Feeling Sick? If you have further questions or concerns, please contact the Health Office.
Progress Reports Go Home Friday
Progress Reports will go home Friday. These progress reports are not like what many of us experienced as children. Students do not get grades using the A-F system in elementary school. Instead, teachers are reporting on progress towards end of year standards.
Spanish Language Arts, English Language Arts, and Math will be graded on a 4 point scale.
4 - Masters Standards
3 - Approaching Mastery
2 - Making Some Progress Toward Standards
1 - Making Little Progress Toward Standards
The goal is for students to get a 4 by the end of the year. Students who are on target to meeting standards by the end of the year will get a 3 at this point in the year. Students who get a 4 now have already met the end of year grade level standard, which means they are advanced. Students getting a 2 are slightly below grade level expectations and will need an extra push to meet grade level standards by the end of the year. Students getting a 1 are far below the target at this point in the year and will need a change in their academic program. If your child gets a 1, reach out to the teacher to find out the plan and how you can support.
Other subjects will be reported on using a frequency scale (how often they perform the standard or expectation):
C = Consistently
U = Usually
O = Occasionally
R = Rarely
The progress report is mainly for the parent/guardian to know how their child is doing. It is not for the student. When speaking to your child about the progress report, start with the positive, and if there are areas of improvement, choose one to focus on. Remember, all students progress at their own pace, and we want to continue to encourage students to do their best and feel good about school and learning.
