SPS in the Pride Parade
SPS has marched in the Seattle Pride Parade for over 25 years with students, staff, and families. This year, we are proud to be part of an intergenerational group of Grand Marshals, led by LGBTQ+ athletes Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe! All are welcome to join.
Find us at the front of the parade staging area, prior to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, along 4th Avenue downtown. Look for the big yellow school bus adorned with decorations made by students and families. No RSVP is required.
- For information about LGBTQ+ supports in SPS, visit the SPS LGBTQ+ webpage.
- You can also view our one-pager about school practices for Pride month.
For more information, contact Sam Cristol, SPS Health Education, secristol@seattleschools.org or visit the Seattle Pride website.
Eckstein Library News: Books due 6-17-24 & Reading Suggestions for the Summer!
Eckstein Library books are due Monday, June 17th
Please have your student return books they are reading by June 17th. If there is a fine listed for a book, the fine goes away as long as they turn in the book because there are no overdue fines! There is a fine for lost books but I also accept a physical copy of the book instead which can sometimes be cheaper. For 6th and 7th grade students, I will check out up to 10 books over the summer as long as their account is clear! Contact the librarian Erin Sterling at emsterling@seattleschools.org with any questions. Students can go to the Clever Portal / Follett Destiny Discover / My Stuff / Checkouts to see what they have out!
Reading Suggestions for the summer
Try the Seattle Public Library / Seattle Arts & Lectures Book Bingo! Pick up a copy of Book Bingo at any local library branch and students can bring in a copy or a photo of their completed book bingo to Ms. Sterling in September for an extra prize from Eckstein. Check out the Eckstein library website (https://ecksteinms.seattleschools.org/academics/library) or following links for suggestions in all the different categories for teens. The lists Ms. Sterling made include childhood favorites (that Ms. Sterling loved!); picture books; Eagles Read booklist; Another Time (books from past or future); Supernatural; BIPOC Fantasy / Sci-Fi; Fairytales, Myths, and Legends; About Someone You Admire; Made You LOL (Diary of a Wimpy Kid goofy readalikes; Stand Up, Yumi Chung heartwarming readalikes); Want to Visit; Short ‘n Sweet; Nom, nom, nom (Food & Cooking); Books about Identity; Informational Books; Made Into a Show or Movie; Start a Hobby; Award-Winning Books Adults Should Read; Books with Great Titles; and Bestselling Audiobooks great for reading out loud!
24-25 Eagles Read list is live!
Ms. Sterling chooses 50 books every year to be on the Eagles Read List. These are books where students can earn prizes for books they read from the list and participate in a pizza party at the end of the year if they read at least 20. Check out the Eagles Read list on the library website and students can start reading right away this summer! Note: titles marked as Young Adult means there may be some content that is more mature. The idea behind the list is that there is a book for everyone.
