Our Elementary Curriculum - Preparing our students for success
Every one of our elementary schools provides a well-rounded curriculum focused on literacy and numeracy, an interactive and hands-on science curriculum utilizing Foss and Next Gen Science Standards, and social studies programming focused on preparing young people to become responsible citizens through integrated studies. Our elementary English Language Arts Curriculum is focused around Reader's and Writer's Workshop.
Our K-5 math curriculum is built around the Bridges in Mathematics model. The mastery of mathematics is crucial to be well equipped for the 21st Century. Our students are expected to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, to be able to access and analyze information, and possess natural curiosity and imagination. The West Bloomfield School District is committed to helping each child reach the highest level of competency in mathematics, from kindergarten through their senior year in high school.
The focus of district, state and national standards in social studies is to create responsible citizens. In addition to our learning targets we utilize a program called Capturing Kids Hearts. CKH teaches leadership and personal accountability to every student, creating a culture of student empowerment. Learn more about Capturing Kids Hearts here.
We also offer an engaging specials curriculum for all students, iCenters at every building, as well as our magnet program.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) is a criteria-based program available for both current West Bloomfield School District students/residents as well as Schools of Choice applicants. All applicants must meet specific criteria and SOC applicants must be selected in the lottery in order to be accepted into this program. STEAM is now available at every elementary building!
Two different kindergarten options
We offer full day kindergarten and kindergarten prep. If your child is not quite ready for Kindergarten and could use some extra time, check out Kindergarten Prep! It is our two-year Kindergarten Program that is designed to do just that. Kindergarten Prep is held at Doherty and Gretchko Elementary Schools for the 2023-24 school year. For 2024-25 it will be housed at Doherty and Scotch.
