The Pulse - January Newsletter
Greetings from Milledgeville!
We are off to a great start with the spring term and continue to have a lot of interest in our programs and majors.
Our online master’s in nursing has moved up in rankings within the US News and World Report Rankings to 17th! We also have a lot of interest in our exercise science program which is common for our college. We are investigating ways to use the public health program as a pre-clinical degree as well so more to come on that.
Currently, we are searching for some lecturers in the School of Health and Human Performance, and we also hope to fill some positions in the School of Nursing as the semester moves along.
This spring we hope to share more dates for our mobile screening clinics with you and if in your neighborhood, please spread the word to help us reach more Georgians with preventive health messaging and screenings.
Currently, Georgia ranks 37th in overall health outcomes nationally, and 48th in access to care as well as preventive services availability. We endeavor to help improve those outcomes. In case you were wondering, among county health rankings, Baldwin is 112th, Wilkinson is 148th, and Hancock is 159th among Georgia counites so there is a lot to do!
As always, when in Milly, please stop in and say hello. We love to see alums and friends of the college when they have time to pay a visit.
Happy New Year!

Repetition - not resolutions - the key to growth in 2025, says former Olympic coach
Dr. Mike Martino believes in hard work.
From swimming competitively at a national level, to coaching Olympians, to creating a high-performance training model for NASCAR pit crews, he has seen the power of focused dedication pay off in a variety of arenas.
Reflecting on his career, the professor of Exercise Science at Georgia College & State University outlined a set of rules that he recommends to anyone seeking to grow, improve or achieve more in 2025.
“Because I was an athlete, I know the competitiveness, the dedication and discipline that it takes to be world-class,” Martino said. “That drive, the internal motivation and intrinsic drive to be the best that you possibly can be — I’ve just transferred that over to my teaching.”
According to the Pew Research Center, 49% of people aged 18-29 made at least one resolution in 2024. Out of everyone with a resolution, 79% said their resolution concerned their health.
