November is Homelessness Awareness Month!
Did you know?
- In the United States, 1 in 30 children experience homelessness and 51% of those children are under the age of five.
The need for support and resources is rising and we are here to assist the best we can!
The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that is in place to support children who are experiencing homelessness. Living in one of the following situations may qualify a student to be eligible to receive services and supports under McKinney-Vento:
- sharing housing with family or friends due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason
- living in a hotel, motel, or campground
- living in an emergency or transitional shelter;
- was abandoned at a hospital;
- living in a public or private place not designated for humans to live
- fleeing domestic violence
- living in a car, park, public space, abandoned building, substandard housing, bus or train station, or similar places
- living in one of the above circumstances and are migratory
- an unaccompanied youth living with someone other than their parent or legal guardian due to conflict, were kicked out, or for other reasons
If your children are living in any of the situations above, please reach out to your child's school social worker to discuss possible supports that may be available to you. You can also email mkv@basd.k12.wi.us to get in touch with a homeless liaison.

Traditional mental health services available through their clinics include outpatient individual and group psychotherapy, behavior management training, family therapy, and services for persons with addictions. Clinical specialty areas include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), trauma, child behavior management, sexual abuse, depression, and anxiety. Clinical Psychology Associates also offer school-based therapy options.

Professional Services Group
PSG has been providing school-based mental health since 2015. They strive to help prepare students to learn, by providing support with mental health and wellbeing challenges. Providing services within the school increases access for families who may not be able to go to an outpatient clinic on their own. It also reduces the amount of time students are missing classroom instruction, increasing their likelihood of academic success. School-based therapists go directly into the school to provide intervention including individual and group therapy, education/consultation for school personnel, and family therapy as needed.
Referrals for school-based services are made by school staff; including counselors, social workers, and psychologists. Parents who are interested in their child receiving these services should contact school personnel and request that a referral be made.

Energy Assistance (WHEAP - Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Plus)
WHEAP assistance is a one-time payment during the heating season (October 1-May 15). The funding pays a portion of energy costs, but it is not intended to cover the entire energy costs of a residence. The amount of the energy assistance benefit depends on a variety of factors, including the household’s size, income, and energy costs. In most cases, the energy assistance benefit is paid directly to the household’s energy supplier.
Energy Services for Racine County administers the WHEAP program. Call to schedule an appointment: 262-633-6000 or apply online at heat.help or print and complete and return a paper application.
