New Albany High School
4th Quarter Grading Procedures
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last night at the regular meeting of the Board of Education, the Board approved suspending our current grading policy to authorize the Superintendent and Administrators to develop and implement a system to assign or modify grades during the COVID 19 Pandemic. This newly developed grading system for middle and high school students is a result of our desire to value the continuation of learning while acknowledging the difficulties students and parents are experiencing during the Pandemic. The rationale for these changes include the need:
for students not to be harmed academically by the pandemic,
for students to be recognized for their success in online learning and
to mitigate the stress and anxiety parents and students are experiencing.
New grading procedures for secondary students for the 4th quarter:
If an engaged student (participating and completing 70% of assignments) earns a 4th quarter grade that is lower than his/her 3rd quarter grade, then the teachers will adjust the 4th quarter grade to equal the letter grade and percentage of 3rd quarter.
If a student earns a 4th quarter grade that is higher than or equal to his/her 3rd quarter grade, the student will earn the higher grade.
If a student does not engage and does not complete 70% of their assignments, then the student will be assigned the grade that they earned for the 4th quarter.
Seniors who do not engage in assignment completion at all, risk not meeting graduation requirements. The final determination of a senior meeting or not meeting graduation requirements will be the responsibility of the building principal.
There will be no final exams during the 4th quarter.
Quarter 3 and Quarter 4 will be worth 25% each for a total of 50% for Semester 2.
Important Dates:
May 4, 2020 - Professional Development Day - No School for Students
May 15, 2020 - Last Day of School for Seniors
May 22, 2020 - Last Day of School for Grades 7-11
As we head into phase 3 of online instruction, please know that we value your commitment to this online learning model. We also value our students’ commitment to learning. It is our desire to meet the needs of all students as we close out this academic year in this very difficult situation. We hope that these changes reduce the stress and anxiety felt among our families and our students.
Please reach out to us should you have additional questions or need clarification.
